Mark your calendar! The 2014 golf season is just about here.

Although no official opening date has been set, barring any last minute curve balls from Mother Nature, we will be playing golf at LGC very soon.

Taking advantage of the break in the cold weather, Bob and his crew are completing the spring aerification. And top dressing. Once we are up and running, it will be very nice to have that disruption behind us.

Cleanup of the area around the 12th (back) tee is almost complete. It is a very different look, but has created several interesting options for the green committee to consider.

The guys finish up aerifying the 7th green.

behind the 12th tee.

A different look indeed!

Please note that the course is COMPLETELY CLOSED to play prior to the official opening. There is plenty of work to be completed to get the course ready for play, so your cooperation and patience is very much appreciated.

Save the date: Of note, on Wednesday, May 7th, we have scheduled an MGA Rules Night. It will begin at 7 pm and give you a chance to brush up on the rules and perhaps answer any rules questions you might have.

Check Your Grips
In the mean time, it is time to dig the clubs out and get them dusted off. This is also the perfect time to check the condition of your grips. The dry winter months has undoubtedly taken its toll on them. Whether stored in the house, garage, or even worse yet, your car trunk, most grips are ready for replacement after the winter. I see many golfers who try to get some extended play with old worn out grips. Sometimes grip wear is hard to detect because it can be so gradual. The fact is, once the grips have worn out, more grip pressure is required to keep the club from slipping in your hands. This added grip pressure increases tension in the swing and does not allow for the proper release (rotation) of the hands and clubhead. Grip replacement . . . it might just be the first step in curing that dreaded slice!
There are some awesome new grips available this year. So bring your clubs by the shop sometime for a FREE grip evaluation. If new grips are in order, we can get them installed in 1 day.

As if the golf swing wasn’t difficult enough, I sometimes have to wonder at how it’s explained. Even some of the most basic and fundamental parts of the swing are not well described and create the wrong focus in golfers’ minds. Here are two.

You’d think we all understood the grip. After all, how many pictures of a grip have we seen with the ‘V’s’ between thumb and forefinger pointing a particular direction? Every book seems to include that image. And every golfer does a pretty good job of emulating that position. Trouble is, too many golfers get to that position with the handle of the club gripped in their palm. That will already reduce flexibility, rob the golfer of club head speed, and make the proper release of the club through impact more difficult.

Another is the greenside sand shot. Although in truth, most don’t feel confident in this shot, it’s also true to say many go wrong before they swing the club. We’ve all read the instructions. Open our stance. Dig our feet in a little. Open the club face. Take the sand first, etc etc. Did you know that you “open the face and then take your grip”? Most golfers take their grip and stance and then twist their wrists and forearms to open the face. That makes it more difficult to release the club head through the sand and contact area.

The golf swing is much easier if it’s built correctly from the ground up. If you’re practicing over the next month, invest a little more in the fundamentals of grip, stance, posture and alignment. Contact us now if you would like to improve your game.
