Let’s Play Ball! The 2014 golf season at LGC has begun!
The golf course is now open for play. Carts will be available for use starting Saturday, April 12th. Weekend tee times have not started yet – “show n’ go”. The putting green remains closed and we are playing to a temporary green on the 6th hole. Everything else is open, so get those clubs dusted off and come on out and get some early spring training in. The weekend forecast looks great!

Please note, the kitchen is also now open.

Mark your calendar!
Wednesday, May 7th, we have scheduled an MGA Rules Night. It will begin at 7:00 pm and give you a chance to brush up on the rules and perhaps answer any rules questions you might have.

    Check Your Grips
This is the perfect time to check the condition of your grips. The dry winter months has undoubtedly taken its toll on them. Whether stored in the house, garage, or even worse yet, your car trunk, most grips are ready for replacement after the winter. I see many golfers who try to get some extended play with old worn out grips. Sometimes grip wear is hard to detect because it can be so gradual. The fact is, once the grips have worn out, more grip pressure is required to keep the club from slipping in your hands. This added grip pressure increases tension in the swing and does not allow for the proper release (rotation) of the hands and clubhead. Grip replacement . . . it might just be the first step in curing that dreaded slice!

There are some awesome new grips available this year. So bring your clubs by the shop sometime for a FREE grip evaluation. If new grips are in order, we can get them installed in 1 day.

Masters week!

This Major follows a season of first-time winners and rookies performing like they’ve never performed before. So, is it possible that someone playing their first ever Masters could win this major? The odds are against it, but if there’s a year it could happen then you’d have to say this might be it. Most experts make a strong case for someone who knows Augusta well. Many think that a previous winner will stand atop the leader board on Sunday. Whichever way, I don’t subscribe to the view that the excitement has gone out of it just because Tiger Woods isn’t there. He adds a storyline, no doubt. But don’t worry, the Masters will write its own story.

If I were to add a note of concern, it might be that golf is at its best when there are rivalries. Hogan, Nelson, Snead. Nicklaus, Palmer, Player. In each case the rivalries of these great golfers produced excitement and added to periods of growth in the game. Let’s face it, even our own golf is so much more fun when there are friends you can have fun competing against.

So when the Masters has come and gone, pick out your rivals and make this the best golf year ever. Let’s write our own stories.

THE ‘FACE’ OF GOLF IS NOW MAKING BETTER APPROACH PLAY EASIER TO ACHIEVE
Last week I suggested that the trend for larger, thicker Iron heads in the search for ease of use might be over. I also think the trend for strengthening lofts might also be about to come to an end.

It’s easy to laugh at the “my #6 Iron goes farther than your #6 Iron” advertising. It’s easy to hit a #6 Iron farther when it’s a #5 Iron in disguise or even in some cases on its way to being a #4 Iron!

The key to better approach play anyway isn’t how far you can hit a #6 Iron, it’s the ability to hit the same number shot after shot.
The last few months have been about thinner, lighter, stronger, and faster materials and precision engineering that allows variable thickness on faces, unsupported faces, and other design methods that seem more closely related to the space industry than the golf industry.
We may have space-age materials and manufacturing changing the way a face performs, but what hasn’t changed is the need to find out where you strike the face with the ball. If your swing features a more sweeping contact then we need the hitting zone to be lower and the launch angle to be raised.

If you strike the ball higher on the face then you need a different Iron design and forgiveness probably towards the heel. Your route to better ball striking starts with a review of your swing and your desire to get a better result.
