Greetings from Bellville Thursday, April 25, 2024

Thankfully March has been a good month with cooler temperatures and the course got about 30mm of rainfall.

We had some strange weather conditions over the last year and a bit. The summer of 2015 was extremely long (first rains in beginning of May), and was followed by the winter of 2015 which saw us 266.8 mm down on rainfall from 2014 (2014 = 658mm while 2015 = 391.2mm). This resulted in our greens and irrigation dams not receiving a proper flush on clean water. January and February of this year recorded the highest average temperatures.

This led to an outbreak of fungal activity in the Western Capes courses with Poa greens and poor water quality. Our greens have also seen activity during the season, with the latest activity being a fungal pathogen called Anthracnose which has attacked the Poa plants. This pathogen thrives in conditions with poor water quality, non to poor drainage, moisture and stress (mechanical, heat…) We have tried chemical treatments, spoon feeding of fertilisers and adjustments to reduce plant stress to manage the disease.

Our latest water analysis from the irrigation dams shows heightened levels of Ph, chloride, bicarbonates and sodium levels which put the plant under stress (especially Poa) and effect the soil profiles, with the latest soil analysis showing a spike in Ph and sodium that influences the uptake of nutrients. Plant cells become weaker and susceptible to disease, insects and heat stress. With the current program and increase in fresh rain water, flushing the greens profiles and cooler temperatures (less stress) will assist in improving the disease recovery and surfaces.

Rule 23 Loose Impediments
23-1 Relief

Except when both the loose impediment and the ball lie in or touch the same hazard, any loose impediment may be removed without penalty.

If the ball lies anywhere other than on the putting green and the removal of a loose impediment by the player causes the ball to move, Rule 18-2 applies.

On the putting green, if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved in the process of the player removing a loose impediment, the ball or ball-marker must be replaced. There is no penalty, provided the movement of the ball or ball-marker is directly attributable to the removal of the loose impediment. Otherwise, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke under Rule 18-2.

When a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed.

Note:
If the ball lies in a hazard, the player must not touch or move any loose impediment lying in or touching the same hazard - see Rule 13-4c.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE:
Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes.

(Searching for ball in hazard - see Rule 12-1)
(Touching line of putt - see Rule 16-1a)
