Handicap Intervention
The golf operations committee decided on the following action to be implemented in all Bellville Golf Club Competitions to all prize winners.

The HNA handicap manual allows Clubs to do the following:
12.4.2 Manual Intervention
There may be cases where a player frequently wins Better-Ball competitions, yet posts net scores that result in little or no handicap change. In these cases, the Handicapper may apply the following formula to such player’ s Better-Ball gross scores:

RG = Par + A – P

Where:
RG = Revised Gross, Par = Par of the course played, A = Allowance, P = Number of pars
  • A is calculated as 18 + (Par of Course – Standard Rating). If the player’s handicap exceeds 18, then
  • A is further adjusted by adding (Handicap – 18) to A.
  • P is the total number of Pars made by the player in a round. Each Birdie is to count as two Pars and each Eagle to count as three Pars.
This will be implemented starting on Saturday, 4 June, and will be used in all member competitions, Seniors and Ladies included.

For more information you can contact Werner or go to the HNA website.

This week's course news
It certainly feels like the seasons are changing, June has arrived and we have been blessed with a fair few weeks of near perfect weather. And hopefully get a good down pour of rain, which will flush not only the profiles but the irrigation dams as well. Rainfall recorded for May = 23 mm.

The surrounds around the 11th green have been tied-in to improve the flow of the surrounds, these areas will receive a further roll and grow-in practices to improve the recovery period.

The team will move over to the 6th surround next with the same goal.

The kikuyu on the course has had a granular fertiliser application which with the warm weather and few mm of rainfall, has promoted the kikuyu's uniformity and will strengthen the planting going into winter.

Water Hazards (Including Lateral Water Hazards)
26-1 Relief for Ball in Water Hazard

It is a question of fact whether a ball that has not been found after having been struck towards a water hazard is in the hazard. In the absence of knowledge or virtual certainty that a ball struck toward a water hazard, but not found, is in the hazard, the player must proceed under Rule 27-1.

If a ball is found in the water hazard or if it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard (whether the ball lies in water or not), the player may under penalty of one stroke:

a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or

b. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or

c. As additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean his ball or substitute a ball.
  • (Prohibited actions when ball is in a hazard – see Rule 13-4)
  • (Ball moving in water in a water hazard – see Rule 14-6)
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE:
Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes

If you and a few friends want to find an alternative to a gym session, or need an excuse to spend an hour at the golf facility, then ‘Par 18’ is great fun and a great way to practise.

Nine short-game ‘holes’ to test your skills

Three easier shots (a short chip, a simple short pitch, a greenside bunker);
Three medium shots (a medium length chip, a greenside bunker but a little further back from the flag, a 25 metre pitch);
Three tougher shots (a long chip, a long greenside bunker shot, a pitch over a bunker to the flag).
Hole out each time (e.g. short-game shot and putts) and keep your total score.

This game is not only a great way to spend 30 – 45 minutes, it’s a superb practice drill for your short-game. Nine different short-game scenarios and pressure on your putting. Where are you strong? Where could you improve? Come and chat with us

This is one of the best examples of written instruction causing confusion. It’s interpreted by most as meaning take your grip and then rotate the gripped club to open the face.

Every golfer can learn how to play good bunker shots. There are some simple fundamentals. Don’t struggle in the bunker.
