New SAGA Handicap Cards
By now, most of you will have received your new handicap affiliation card – and if you haven’t, please follow up directly with your club.

Your handicap card identifies you as an affiliated member of the South African Golf Association and gives you access to the SAGA handicap system. You can submit scores at the golf club’s handicap terminals, online at the www.handicaps.co.za website or through one of the HNA Apps.

For first time visitors to the HNA website, use your name and player ID, as reflected on your card, to log in and create an easy-to-remember login password. You can also use this to record scores on the terminals.

If you have forgotten your login details, simply email us at editor@handicaps.co.za.

Valid Scores for Handicapping
We have had numerous people query the controls in the South African system and put forward proposals that handicap scores should be verified before being accepted. South Africa, like a number of other countries, relies on the integrity of our golfers, along with peer review, and most importantly the Handicap Committee at each club, to ensure members are recording their correct scores.

The general view is that more than 98% of golfers are honest, and if clubs open rounds so that all players have to enter scores, then fellow players – along with the handicap committees – can check that the less than 2% who are prone to managing their handicaps are policed.

Please encourage the clubs you play at or visit to open rounds on the system, whether it is for a club competition, social round or corporate day.

Valid Scores as detailed in Section 5 of the SAGA Handicap manual.

5.6 Scores on all Courses
Scores on all courses, at home and away, should be reported by the player, together with the Standard Rating. This includes rounds played outside Southern Africa, where different terminology may refer to Rating or CSS instead of Standard Rating.

5.7 Scores not Acceptable
Scores made under the following conditions are not acceptable for handicap purposes and should not be entered in any form in the player’s scoring record:

A
B
C
D
E
F

When the score cannot be ratified by a playing partner or competitor (for example, a golfer playing on his/her own).
When the types of clubs are limited (as in a competition in which only iron clubs are allowed).
When the round played includes the use of “Mulligans”.
Competition Match Play Rounds
When more than one ball is used
When the course is not officially rated.
When the player uses non-conforming clubs, balls or tees, or with respect to Rule 14-3 (Rules of Golf), where an artificial device is used in the execution of stroke or when equipment is used in an unusual manner during the execution of a stroke.

Rule 27
Ball Lost or Out of Bounds; Provisional Ball

27-2 Provisional Ball

B. When Provisional Ball Becomes Ball in Play
The player may play a provisional ball until he reaches the place where the original ball is likely to be. If he makes a stroke with the provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place, the original ball is lost and the provisional ball becomes the ball under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 27-1).

If the original ball is lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds, the provisional ball becomes the ball in play, under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 27-1).

Exception:
If it is known or virtually certain that the original ball, that has not been found, has been moved by an outside agency (Rule 18-1), or is in an obstruction (Rule 24-3) or an abnormal ground condition (Rule 25-1c), the player may proceed under the applicable Rule.

Watching the ball check and stop quickly on a greenside shot is great fun. It also gives you more control. The search for more spin on greenside shots:

Is your Wedge helping you to control the golf ball? You might have been fit for your Irons, but were you fit for your Wedges? Does the design of your Wedges help make your short-game easier and more effective? Why not book in for a scoring club assessment?

Here Martin Hall of Golf Channel shows you Gary Player’s drill to perfect the feeling of control of the Sand Wedge club head through impact.

There is a lot of confusing information written about the bunker shot, yet with the correct technique, this is an easy shot to play well. If you’re at all unsure of how to play this shot (beyond the words) or you’re struggling from greenside bunkers, then come and see us now.
