Matkovich Golf Course Construction
Somerset-West Remodeling Progress Report As At 17 November 2017

Dear Wouter

Since the last update there has been very positive growth generally.

With the exception of 12 fairway and a portions on 14 and 16 the fairways are all virtually covered and starting to look good. We are using a mix of topsoil and sprig from the old course to fill the gaps and hopefully this will take off and fill in the poorer areas. The weather for the fairways has been extraordinary and we have seen tremendous growth.

The greens seem to have turned the corner. The winds of the Gordons Bay fire hammered us and we certainly lost a couple of weeks of progress on the greens. The sand in the weaker areas was quite literally blown away. We have re-seeded these and covered them with hessian (which you will see on the 17th). We have had good germination under these covers and will remove them on Monday when the temperatures drop a bit. Then it will be a slow, steady process to bring down the cutting heights to the rest of the green. We are plugging smaller areas with plugs harvested from the edges of the greens.

We are slowly installing the gravel into the pathways and will then commence with topsoiling and polishing of these to blend them into the surrounds.

We have completed the graveling of the security road along the fence line which will ensure that this can be patrolled and allow the maintenance team to get to and fro easily.

The fence with the exception of the river entrances and exits and the area around the underpass is complete and we are now installing the electric cables to the irrigation system. Once this is powered up we will be able to water at night and therefore be more efficient when the evaporation decreases and the water can soak slowly into the root zone. We also have a security guard with a dog patrolling at night and so far haven’t had any incidents of theft. The fencing team have started to place the flat wrap razor wire on the top of the fence and this will further deter anyone seeking mischief.
The beautiful underpass is in. The week-end of the 4th saw the engineers move in. They finally got permission from PRASA to commence work at 21h00. The rails were removed along with the ballast in the vicinity of the cutting and then the cutting commenced and was completed by 06h00 the following morning. A crane then positioned the bases of the culvert followed by the rectangular portals. This work was completed around 18h00 on Sunday evening and by 24h00 the rails were back in place- incredible work by a great team led by Brian Kemlo. The engineers are now installing the wing walls and this will be followed by paving through the underpass.

I have been asked frequently when the course will be opened. I think I can only liken this to the birth of a child. We are in the maternity ward now and in labour. Hopefully the delivery will not last too long and the child will be brought into the world kicking and screaming. We hope when the members finally get onto the course they don’t do the same.
There is an awful amount of work still to be done before the course looks the way we envisage it and this is going to take time and seasons to achieve. The irrigation system is the same as the top course a 2 row Hunter system. There are no points to water from accepting turf valves behind the greens so outside of the irrigation we can do nothing before autumn. Like the analogy of the child above we have a long walk to see the course grow to maturity.

As always thanks for your support and encouragement. I cannot tell you how much strength you have given us when we are despairing and down due to seemingly impossible odds.

Kind regards
Sabine

We have done the final drone of the new course and you can view it on our website or click on link below:

Our winner of the first Sundowner was John Gagiano, well done my man!

Flanking him are the famous team of Jan Wams (left), Jay Jooste (the one that looks like a Hoender) and Brian Kemlo (right).

Remember Sundowner will be played every Friday until end of March 2018 unless notified.

R4000.00 SA Rant up for grabs this Friday!

Abe will be there for the raffles.

Ladies & Gents

Next Friday 24th from 13:00, Callaway will be set up on the range for a demo.

Featuring their 'Jail Break' technology in their Epic drivers, the new range of Mack Daddy forged wedges and the Odyssey putters.

Anybody wanting to be specifically fitted for anything must book with me beforehand.

Thanks
Will

One of the keys to hitting good Fairway Wood shots is a shallower angle of attack.
That is made easier if you ensure you have a wide take-away.
On the range, practise a slower, wider and more even tempo swing.

If you’d like to be able to come to the golf course, even if you haven’t played for a while, and know that you’ll still hit Fairways,
and be able to then attack greens with your short and mid-Irons, then you want a swing: with athletic posture;
an effective upper body turn; balance and weight movement; and a good swing path.
All within the reach of most golfers.

What's BREXIT all about? Here is the real meaning of it made simple!

Dave Davis is at the golf club returning his locker key when Mr Barnier, the membership secretary sees him.

"Hello Mr Davis", says Mr Barnier. "I'm sorry to hear you are no longer renewing your club membership, if you would like to come to my office we can settle your account”.
"I have settled my bar bill." says Mr Davis.

"Ah yes Mr Davis", says Mr Barnier, "but there are other matters that need settlement.”
In Mr Barniers office -
Mr Davis explains that he has settled his bar bill so wonders what else he can possibly owe the Golf Club?
"Well Mr Davis" begins Mr Barnier, "you did agree to buy one of our Club Jackets”.
"Yes" agrees Mr Davis "I did agree to buy a jacket but I haven't received it yet". "As soon as you supply the jacket I will send you a cheque for the full amount”.
"That will not be possible" explains Mr Barnier. "As you are no longer a club member you will not be entitled to buy one of our jackets"!
"But you still want me to pay for it" exclaims Mr Davis.
"Yes" says Mr Barnier, "That will be £500 for the jacket. There is also your bar bill".
"But I've already settled my bar bill" says Mr Davis. "Yes" says Mr Barnier, "but as you can appreciate, we need to place our orders from the Brewery in advance to ensure our bar is properly stocked". "You regularly used to spend at least £50 a week in the bar so we have placed orders with the brewery accordingly for the coming year. You therefore owe us £2600 for the
year".
"Will you still allow me to have these drinks?" asks Mr Davis. "No of course not Mr Davis". "You are no longer a club member!" says Mr Barnier. "Next is your restaurant bill" continues Mr Barnier. "In the same manner we have to make arrangements in advance with our catering suppliers". "Your average restaurant bill was in the order of £300 a month, so we'll require payment of £3600 for the next year". "I don't suppose you'll be letting me have these meals either" asks Mr Davis. "No, of course not" says an irritated Mr Barnier, "you are no longer a club member!”
"Then of course" Mr Barnier continues, "there are repairs to the clubhouse roof".
"Clubhouse roof" exclaims Mr Davis, "What's that got to do with me?"
"Well it still needs to be repaired and the builders are coming in next week", your share of the bill is £2000”.
"I see" says Mr Davis, "anything else?".
"Now you mention it" says Mr Barnier, "there is Fred the Barman's pension". "We would like you to pay £5 a week towards Fred's pension when he retires next month". "He's not well you know so I doubt we'll need to ask you for payment for longer than about five years, so £1300 should do it”.
"This brings your total bill to £10,000" says Mr Barnier.
"Let me get this straight" says Mr Davis, "you want me to pay £500 for a jacket you won't let me have, £2600 for beverages you won't let me drink and £3600 for food you won't let me eat, all under a roof I won't be allowed under and not served by a bloke who's going to retire next month!”
"Yes, it's all perfectly clear and quite reasonable" says Mr Barnier.
"Piss off!" says Mr Davis

Now we understand what Brexit is all about!
