Greetings from Matt

I’d like to start this week’s newsletter by paying our respects to Denise Hull. We here in the shop and all members and guests who knew Denise Hull, are enormously saddened by her passing. We had all become so accustomed to seeing her here in the halfway house, having a cuppa and chatting away to all who passed by her.

Whenever she waited to welcome the ladies in, whether it be from the 9th green or the 18th, she was always that friendly face who brightened the club up.

Denise was an outstanding Lady Captain who was the driving force in pushing for club “gees” and gender equality at the Met. Her amazing energy was also directed at improving the club’s amenities and creating a comfortable environment for all players and guests.

We will continue to treasure and watch over everything she had accomplished at the Met.
Our condolences go out to the Hull family and friends.

New Putters in the shop

Something to be excited about, we’ve received the new TaylorMade Putters – as designed for the current world Number 1 Dustin Johnson and recent Number 1, Jason Day.

The Spider Tour Black and The Spider Tour Red
Both putters feature a removed sightline and slight toe hang. The putters combine a compact head and the forgiving MOI that the Spider design is renowned for.
The main difference aside from the colours is a slightly firmer feel off the face of the black model. It is a beautifully balanced putter that is worth a try!

It has a hefty price tag, but when you start sinking more putts, you’ll forgive yourself! Speak to us today.

Yet another victory for the TaylorMade ‘M’ series metalwoods (and TaylorMade Irons and Wedges).

Yes, Sung Hyun Park took the US Women’s Open. Besides highlighting the incredible Tour impact of the ‘M’ metalwoods, it demonstrated the importance of conquering miss-fortune and mistakes.

A year ago, Park managed to find the water on the 18th hole at CordeValle. She missed the play-off and her opportunity at a first victory. This year Park finished strongly, birdying 15 and 17 to open a 2 shot lead, powering to her first LPGA victory.

Park also gave us all a lesson in how, within the tournament itself, it’s important to keep looking forward and not to let the bad shots get you down. In her opening round she hit just 10 of 18 greens in regulation. But then got herself right and managed to hit 43 of the last 54.

The impact of lie angle on your approach

Just where you enter the scoring zone, the impact gets worse
Take a #5 Iron out of your bag and raise the toe slightly making the club a little too upright, and then imagine the line of the ball coming off the face. It’s going left. Now take a higher lofted club, a #8 Iron, and do the same test and you’ll notice the impact, or amount that the ball is going to go left, will increase.

There are two styles of Practice

Most advice seems to recommend using one of two practice methods, but when we watch golfers practicing, they don’t utilize either. They hit a few short Wedges to warm up. Then they might hit five or six #8 Irons, before moving up to a #7 Iron, and so on.

 The two different methods

 Block Practice
Used when you want to reinforce a physical feeling in the swing. This is a repetition of the same swing many times, with a single swing thought focused on the change you’re trying to implement.

Which will you use the next time you visit the practice area.

Let’s make sure that you’re getting the full benefit from the time you spend practicing. You’ll hit more good shots.
