There are three tournaments taking place this week but for South Africans - the most important one is the BMW SA Open hosted by the City of Ekhurhuleni which is being played at the Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg.

Headlining the field is tournament host, Ernie Els who will be joined by three past Masters Champions – Mike Weir; Charl Schwartzel and Trevor Immelman.

Other South Africans in the field include Retief Goosen, Branden Grace, Dylan Frittelli, Brandon Stone, George Coetzee, Haydn Porteous, Dean Burmester, Darren Fichardt and a host of others.

It’s interesting to note that the board of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) have elevated the BMW SA Open Championship hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni to be the Flagship Tournament on the Sunshine Tour, which means that 32 OWGR points are up for grabs to the winner. That’s important because players are still trying to qualify for the Masters and players in the World Top 50 get automatic entry to all majors and World Golf Championship events.



• Wilco Nienaber won the Greg Norman Academy Junior Invitational at the Barefoot Resort and Golf in Myrtle Beach in the United States. He won by five strokes on two-under 214 while Woo-Ju Son finished runner-up in the girls event. She finished on six-over 222 three behind winner, Daniela Gonzalez from Columbia.

• Ernie Els has received an Honourary invite to the Masters, that doesn’t mean it’s an invite to play. He’s received the honour normally only given to all past winners to attend the event. If he hopes to play, he will have to qualify.

• Tiger Woods ditched his coach, Chris Como over December and has decided that he will rely on his own advice for a while. Como has been his coach since November 2015.

• Sergio Garcia has officially signed a deal with Callaway to use their clubs and ball. He will play Callaway woods, irons and wedges and the Chrome Soft ball, plus a new Odyssey putter, which will be launched at the PGA Show later this month.

• Rickie Fowler is ranked No 1 on the list of the 10 Best Mannered People. The only other golfer on the Top 10 of the list is Matt Kuchar.

• Tiger Woods has announced that he will be playing two events in Southern California. First will be Torrey Pines, which is where he won his last US Open, and the second is at Riviera in Los Angeles, which was the site of the very first professional event that he played as an amateur.

Friday's Draw, 12 Jan will take place at 17h30.

Wednesday, 17th Jan is our first club competition. The time sheets are available.

Frid 19th, Sat 20th and Sun 21st the course is closed. Bloemfontein Golf Club will host the 2018 Free State Open Amateur Tournament.

If it’s a long Par 4, for most of us,
it’s usually not the tee shot that causes us the challenge.

The approach shot often requires a long iron / hybrid.

Imagine you’ve hit the perfect shot.
Now just three simple questions.
 

Operation 36: A shot to Master


If your handicap is 15 or above, then review your performance and technique on this shot.
It’s the short-pitch shot (between 15 - 50 metres). For most golfers, a 27 - 55 metre shot.
If you’re taking 3 or less to get down from here, every time, then your handicap should be dropping.
It’s worth investing some time and effort into improving and practising your technique.
