Golf | It's a mental game Sometimes when you’re out on the course the game becomes a test of character. Things won’t go your way. Wayward shots and bad luck, poor judgement and difficult lies, seem to conspire against you. But there’s a real, against-the-odds, sense of achievement when you can grind out a score or win despite the challenges. Celebrate the bogey that might have been a double. It’s huge when you scramble a par that by all rights should have been a bogey or worse. Do you have that ability? Can you win while battling the game off the tee and on the green? How strong is your mental game? Click here for a great article on 5 Tips To Improve Your Mental Golf Game.

This week we take a look at Putters: | | PING Craz-E PING putters have been top of the pops since Karsten Solheim first started selling them from his garage in the middle sixties. Now they have many different models – all good! The Craz-E has a large aluminum mallet head with an elastomer insert. The face also features True Roll, which means that wherever you hit the ball on the face, the ball will go the same distance. Really good alignment and the bend in the shaft makes it sit beautifully behind the ball. | | | | Odyssey O Works A stainless steel face with a micro hinge insert, which improves topspin. The new red colour looks good and the strike sounds just right. The shaft goes into the head at the heel and it is easy to line up. As with all Odyssey putters the alignment aids are excellent. | | | | | | | | TaylorMade Spider This is a big hit on all the Tours and now TaylorMade have bought out many new models of this popular putter. They also offer both toe hang and face balanced options. It has a soft polymer face and the strike sound is very quiet, which is great on fast greens. | | | | Evnroll Evnroll Putters is a new company started up by Guerin Rife and his putters will soon feature a new grip that will help you line up the face straight every time. These putters are hot sellers in America and feature face milling. The grooves on the face allow the ball to run true and a consistent distance. | | | | | | | | Callaway Toulon This is Callaway’s version of Scotty Cameron and is an excellent range of putters. The face has deep crosshatch grooves, which look and sound great. There is a lovely range of heads, with my favourite being the version of the old style Ping Anser head. | | | | Scotty Cameron Select Newport Scotty keeps improving his handmade putters. The new 2018 Select Newport is a step up, even from this amazing putter maker. He uses a new dampening material and has redesigned the sole to better both the look at address and the alignment. Expensive but great. It’s easy to see why they are in so many Tour pro’s golf bags. | | | | Brought to by BQ Golf Call Barry Kitching on 082 495 4955 if you are interested in trying out any of these clubs. | Trevor won the beers again. Rogie and Shorty, I am catching up to you! The draw is now sitting at R 4 100.00, Cornelius Verwey missed out.
Big thanks to Stella Artois for sponsoring the beers this year! Just a friendly reminder to all members, that in order to qualify for the Friday roll over prize, you must have attended at least 5 Friday Club draws. Happy birthday to all our golfers who are celebrating their birthdays this week!

| Most golfers are looking for equipment that will make the game a little easier, allowing them to experience the real joy of a good golf shot more often. | | | | | | Where would your game most benefit from an improvement? Do you need to get the ball in play more often, with the added bonus of being further down the fairway? Or would you enjoy hitting a longer Iron knowing it’s likely to land on target, converting more tee shots into good scores? Why not start with an assessment with us? | | |
|
| Have we inspired those of you shooting above 90, to target 89 or less on every occasion this year? How much better is 16 bogeys and 2 pars (on any Par 72), than what you have to live with if you’re shooting 95 or higher? So our final tip: | | How many 3-putts do you have to suffer each round? Most inexperienced golfers’ cards will reveal 3 or more 3-putts each round. Remove those and you’re 3 shots (or more) closer to 89. So here are two suggestions: | | | | | | | Most 3-putts have, at their root, a poor first putt. Sometimes it’s a poor read. Sometimes, poor contact. But mostly, less experienced golfers suffer with poor control of speed and distance. So let’s fix it. | | | | | | Understanding what will happen in the last feet of the putt will not only lead to more great putts that drop, it should also leave you with a little thought: an easier 2nd putt. | | | | Every golfer can become a wizard of the greens. There are skills that everyone can learn. You’ll be amazed at the impact it will have on your scorecard. | | |
