Greetings once more from a beautiful Hermanus. The weather has been mixed, we have had some lovely rain and as usual this time of year, between the storms we also had some fantastic days! The holiday weekend did bring a surge in the number of golfers coming to our Club. Nice to see!

This week we had our 2018 Hermanus Junior Club Championships. It was super to see the youngsters teeing it up, taking it seriously and trying their best! A special mention must go to Edelweiss du Plessis who again ran the tournament beautifully from start to finish.

Sam Simpson was our champion on 7 under par 136. Yes, I said seven under par, a record by far! Sam is no ordinary junior though, he has his sights firmly set on the pro tour and winning majors. He finished second in our Club Championships to Tyron Davidowitz and won the Bellville Club Championships. This is a golfer to watch! We had a lovely group of juniors including one girl, Nicola Streicher, who won the best gross from the red tees, well done! I know this sounds corny, but I guess the winner of the day was definitely golf!

Here on the left we see past junior champion, Tyron Davidowitz, presenting Sam with the trophy. In the middle are all the kids that were playing. On the right, Sam and top red tee golfer Nicola Streicher. Well done to all!

Drainage being attended to

For the next month or so you will notice work being done on the 1st fairway, the 2nd fairway and the 8th fairway. This is to address the weak areas on the course that hassle us in the winter and flood easily.

In consultation with the Greens Committee and Golf Data, we have come up with a plan to raise the 1st and 8th fairways slightly and put in drainage to alleviate the flooding. We will first take off the sod, set the drains and then re-shape the fairways so that the water will move in the correct direction. The work on the second fairway is a cut off drain, again to help with poor drainage. Please treat these areas as GUR, they will be marked. As a consequence, we will be moving the tees around a little to try to permit work to continue, stopping the crew from working is of course a costly expense. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and will let everyone know ahead of time where the tees are.

New tees
We also have work being conducted on the 15th men’s tee. We are placing the men’s tee where the original plans showed the tee should have been - in line with the men’s back tee in the Fynbos area. I think this is going to be a great new tee and definitely add to the attraction of the hole.

On top of all this we are attending and enlarging a number of ladies tees which we consider to be too small and thus over worked and in poor condition. Good luck to Malcolm and Golf Data.

This week it's back to the Church notices again. A nice giggle and thanks Thys Wessels!

You want a soft golf ball but, if you’re a slower swing speed golfer, you also need one that
will maximise energy transfer at impact. We’ve got you covered.

This ball has a super-low compression. The softest ever Srixon core will deliver you an incredibly soft feel.
But this balls core offers two other big gains for the slower swing speed golfer:

If you’re a golfer with a slower swing speed, then it’s worth trialling a sleeve of Srixon
UltiSoft to see how this ball improves your golf experience.

This month, our focus is your score on the Par 3’s you play.
Let’s start that focus with some measurement.

How many under or over Par were you
on the Par 3’s in your last round?

Start to make that a statistic you keep.

Keep your average score per round.

Make this a target for improvement.

Simple Tip #1

Tee the golf ball to the correct height to encourage consistency.

As well as tracking your score on Par 3’s, pay close attention to where your misses are.
Do they reflect the same challenges you have on all approach shots?
Improving your performance on Par 3’s will probably increase your enjoyment throughout the round.
Think about improvement. If we can help,

Until next week have a great one.

Cheers,
Julz and the team
