Greetings again to all! I hope this week has bought you lots of pars and birdies and all is well. Life here at the club has definitely quietened down, so our regulars are enjoying getting the course back. Talking of the course, it’s really looking good, especially so soon after the course maintenance period. Saturday saw the greens running at 9.5 and everyone in the afternoon competition field finished in 4 and a half hours or less which is great.

Anyone who knows Trevor Edwards will attest to the fact that he is a smiling and genuine guy always ready to help, and when he comes in and says he has had a hole-in-one you automatically reach out your hand to congratulate him and find out where it was. However, when he says it was on the 15th you now move into the realm of complete admiration and awe, as we all know the 15th is a par 4 and to get a hole-in-one on a par 4 is the domain of the beasts of deity!

But then when a wry smile creeps across his face, you put 2 and 2 together and realize the holing out was actually on the 16th green! Trevor whilst trying to launch a big one sliced the ball onto the 16th green and holed out! Well, what can we say but congratulations! Thanks for letting me share this one!

Now here’s a sad one to tell you, anyone who followed pro golf in the 80’s and 90’s (and probably the 70’s) probably knows the name Tertius Claasens, it’s synonymous with Simon Hobday. They were both great players and lived life hard and dare I say, got out of one life what normal people get out in two!

I knew Tertius quite well although he was twenty years my senior, but hey when you bought Tertius a beer he was your friend! I played golf with him a few times and always admired his ball striking ability and his ability to score. But as I said he did love that 19th hole, I have one story to share in respect of this man. I know he will be laughing about that and many more when he meets his buddy Simon again.

In the early 90’s we were qualifying for the Goodyear Classic at Wedgewood, just outside PE. I had an early tee time, 7:16, I think and as custom we played 3-balls, myself and one of my playing partners were duly on the tee 10 minutes before time, (I can’t even remember who it was) but our third partner was not there...Tertius Claasens!

We wait and all of a sudden we see this clapped-out car tearing up the long drive and screeching to a halt, just making the car park area! The door opens and out falls Tertius, in full view, staggers to his feet and bellows for a caddie. Tertius makes it with one minute to go. He’s up on the tee, mumbles “Môre, ek is laat, jammer” and tries to peg up his ball, but fails dismally as he comes close to falling over twice, tosses his ball and peg to his caddie and motions to the tee box. His caddie duly pegs up his ball, Tertius takes a big breath and breathes out air that shouldn’t be near any open flames, and then proceeds to stripe this ball straight and long. Our jaws hit the ground!

Anyway, what proceeded was an exhibition of golf that I have never seen again and probably will only see on the PGA tour top draw only...until the 14th! Now by this point Tertius was 7 under par and going like a boeing, we did however notice how on the 15th tee his hands were by this time now not so steady. He goes double drop, single drop, single drop, and a very shaky par on 18 for 69. One word to both playing partners “Dankie” and disappeared into the bar. I shot a 73 that day, it felt like a 100 next to him and I met him again in the tournament at Humewood. Rest in peace, my friend. Happy memories.

If you’re a moderate swing speed golfer, you still want a golf ball to offer
you performance everywhere, with no compromises.

The Srixon AD333 Tour is specifically designed
to give you distance off the tee, stable ball flight in windy conditions, stopping power on approach shots,
check and control around the green, and all
with the feel the best golfers demand.

This is a premium performance golf ball without the premium price. If you’re a regular golfer,
playing probably a 2-pce golf ball, then trial a sleeve of the Srixon AD333 Tour.
Check the all-round performance, but especially note the greenside spin.

We’re trying to help you make more 3’s on the Par 3’s.
Better decision-making is going to improve your scores.

Despite the increased amount of GPS data available, regular and inexperienced golfers still,
on the majority of occasions, come up short.

Even when a golfer knows the “yardage” on each of their clubs,
their misses are mostly short.

Simple Tip #2
Why are you expecting the perfect golf shot? What is your level of consistency?

 If there’s no trouble behind
the green, then ignore the
distance to the flag, and pick a
club that, when struck well,
will get you to the back of
the green. That way a less
than perfect ball strike has
a chance of getting to
the green. Rarely do even
good ball strikers
make perfect contact.

Where are the majority of your misses on all approach shots?
Would aiming for the back of the green (assuming no trouble behind the hole)
be a course management strategy that would improve your whole round?
Improving your performance on Par 3’s will probably increase your enjoyment
throughout the round. Think about improvement. If we can help,

Until next week have a great one.

Cheers,
Julz and the team
