It is with a heavy heart that I have to bid the Metropolitan Golf club and its members a farewell. I joined the club in April 2011 and have been an intergrated part of the club for the past 7 years. In those 7 years, I have managed to become a full member of the PGA of South Africa, and worked as the Pro shop manager for 5 of those years under the tutelage of Bradley Forge.

I am going to be moving to Hong Kong to try and pursue my dream of one day becoming a director of golf, whether back here in South Africa or abroad.

I would like to thank all our members and guests for making my time here very memorable. A special thanks must go to the Club staff, Kitchen Staff, Bar staff and to Basil, Mascott, Moffett and Lennox for making my job here that much easier. Also a big thank you should go to Bradley Forge and the staff that have worked for me over the last couple of years, without them none of this would have been possible.

If any of you find yourselves in Hong Kong, please feel free to give me a shout. This is not a goodbye, but rather a see you later.

Best wishes,
Mathew Golder

5 simple steps to playing the punch shot

1) Push the ball back

Start by moving the ball, one ball further back in your stance. You should notice that your hands are now slightly ahead of the ball at address. This de-lofts the club to create the exact launch angle that you are looking for.

2) Weight shift

Now set a little more weight on your front foot. With a normal mid iron shot your weight will be split 50/50 at address, but with the punch it should be at about 60/40. This helps you have a much steeper angle of attack allowing for the ball to come out lower. This is what we looking for.

3) Left arm level

The next element in our step by step guide is to control the swing. Make sure that the left arm is remaining at waist height and not a full swing to the top. The follow through should be the same as the take away to enable us to keep the ball low. This is the desired ball flight to avoid any obstacles that might be in our way.

4) Follow through

Finally make sure that you complete the follow through, generally when playing the punch the clubhead speed or the swing speed is a lot quicker, therefore it is important we don’t decelerate on the way down, this will cause us to hit the ball fat or thin and the result will not be the desired shot.

5) Keep your head down

OK, we’d like your name.

But actually we’re interested in your
opinion and thoughts.

Pitch and Putt was always a good game

Some golfers will describe other courses as a ‘Pitch and Putt’.
I’m not sure how they mean it, but we’d like to suggest that ‘Pitch and Putt’ is actually a great game.
