So, one of the most exciting golfing weeks of the year has arrived and once again it looks like a thrilling line-up. To choose a winner is going to be difficult, but I would imagine it’s going to come from one of the following, in my order of favourites…Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Speith, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia and of course Tiger. I hope Louis is up there too, the best bet for a South African winner. Get ready for some late nights and enjoy, I know I will!
I was fortunate enough to have been invited to play with Mark McNulty and Brandon Stone at San Lameer last week, and we were hosted by Meyer Du Toit, the Golf Director. It was great fun to see the interaction between Brandon and Mark, both world class players, but from different era’s. Mark was very impressive with the encouragement and advice he gave Brandon, and to his credit, Brandon was very open to his advice and comments. Hopefully it will help see a turnaround in his recent dip in form.
My observations Mark McNulty is a putting genius. I asked him what he thought was the reason he has been so prolific with the putter and why he has moved away from his old “bulls eye” putter?
“I grew up playing on sand greens and used to practice brushing the sand back with my putter head. This taught me how to take the putter back low and straight with minimal if any rotation of the putter face.

We also had to “rake” a path between our ball and the hole on those greens, which I feel helped with my visualisation. As for the change to a a new Odyssey putter, well the ball today reacts differently. Not only when you hit a driver, but also off the putter face and the golf bulls eye simply doesn’t roll the new ball as well.”

Brandon Stone is a very, very impressive ball striker, one of the new breed of super fit powerful young golfers. A proper role model for any juniors looking to take their golf game seriously.
