Marvin Tewu
1976 - 2018

Marvin joined Oubaai in 2006 as a golf marshal after working at Fancourt for 4 years and soon showed his metal. Known by all golfers at Oubaai as the person that made sure the field ran on time, Marvin also loved playing jokes on the other staff and most of all loved getting Karen all worried about the t-sheet only to walk away laughing. He was much loved by the members and staff and very keen to lend a hand, often after hours and over weekends.

A formidable golfer, Marvin was the Oubaai Golf Staff Champion for 2016. He will always be remembered by the staff and management for his constructive and workable solutions to improve Oubaai, always shared with a smile.

Most members didn’t know that Marvin was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis in 2010. He always presented himself as fit for duty regardless of the circumstances.

Very sadly, with his system struggling to deal with the Tuberculosis, Marvin contracted meningitis and all the treatments were unfortunately not successful.

Marvin’s drive and fun-loving nature will continue to inspire the staff and members of the golf club. I will leave you with his favourite quip before you left the 1st Tee... “And remember, don’t play army golf” (Left right, left right...). Rest in Peace Marvin, gone from us far too early but NEVER forgotten!

Another Di-Data event
On Saturday morning we hosted the Di-Data Sponsors event at Oubaai. It was very successful with very positive feedback on the course and clubhouse. My thanks to all the staff for the smooth running of the event.

Good Day Members,

Out on the course this week, the crew have been busy with general day-to-day maintenance. Cart paths have been edged, sprinklers edges have been cleaned up, and the roughs are getting a trim. Fairways and tees have been getting their usual mow throughout the week.

The wetlands on the 8th is near completion for leaks and leak detection. There is one more area that we are assessing for potential leakage. Once it’s filled up we’ll re-establish the water’s edges improving the feature aesthetically but making for a daunting tee shot from the back tees!

Dusting the greens began on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, we were not able to complete the project due to equipment issues. Oil leaked from the sand spreader on the 4th, 5th and 6th greens. It will not affect the playability as it looks much worse than it what it is. As soon as we receive the necessary spares, dusting will recommence.

Our to-do list still shows hollow-tining the tees. February has been a very busy golfing month making it difficult to start the project. We monitor the tee sheets for small gaps in play to start the tining doing our best to cause as little disruption to golfers as possible.

Please read the article about Superintendents weighing up the etiquette of golfers. Some good points for all of us to pick up on.

Please be mindful of pitch marks and repairing your own as well as any other you may come across.

Keep it on the short stuff!
Rohan

Cleveland have brought metalwood forgiveness and distance to the Cleveland Launcher CBX Irons.
They’ve also brought short game precision.

You’re looking for consistently solid contact, and a ball flight that is less vulnerable to debris and water.

As in the Cleveland Wedges, the
sweet spot is moved more central to the face
(face balancing). You’ll find the
hitting zone more frequently.

Tour zip grooves then create a more
consistent spin on the golf ball
even in light rough
and / or wet conditions.

And, as you’d expect from the leading Wedge designers,
a sole design that works more effectively
with the turf at contact.

We think that hitting great mid and longer iron approach shots is an exhilarating feeling.
We think hitting precise shorter approaches, even from the light rough, provides real fulfillment out
on the course. We want to upgrade as many golfers’ approach shots as possible this year.
The right fitted equipment or a better swing or both.

If you’re shooting above 89 on most visits to the golf course, then now is the time to make a leap.
In the last two weeks we’ve provided two tips for those looking to break 90 every round.
Both of those tips have been linked to keeping the ball in play. But the fact is that, if you’re a
regular or inexperienced golfer, then you will rarely be hitting greens in regulation. So…

On almost every hole you’ll have a 10-to-50-metre final shot into the green. This is a shot you should perfect so that you never take more than 3 to get down. Getting up and down in 2 is a bonus.

Three suggestions:
Learn a good short pitch shot and chipping technique.
Practise your short pitch shots and chipping. Never get greedy
(make sure you’re on the green before worrying about how close).

If you’ve never had a pitching / chipping lesson, and you’re not Breaking 90 on each visit to the course,
then we’re betting this is an area where you can make up shots. If you don’t have a technique or ability
to get down in 3 or less every time from within 50 metres, then
