Golf Course Maintenance
We are very pleased to announce that from 1 April 2018 Turfworx will be taking over the maintenance of the Oubaai golf course from Golf Data. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Golf Data and the team for all their hard work and inputs over a 13 year period that they have been at Oubaai. It is really appreciated by all!

Turfworx is a turf grass maintenance, golf course maintenance and horticultural services group that focuses on providing a quality service to world class standards. Amongst other contracts, Turfworx currently looks after Pinnacle Point golf course, Pezula Championship golf course, Fancourt Montagu gardens, Thesen Island gardens and Outeniqua Stadium. We are looking forward to welcoming Danny and the team to Oubaai on the 1st.

Golf Academy at Oubaai!
The appointment of a golf academy at Oubaai has been a long time coming. We are delighted to announce that the appointment of Adam McKinley and the ASM Academy has been finalised. ASM Academy offers a unique approach to education through their bespoke golf development programmes. They are also very focused on making golf more accessible to young people in Africa with the intention to identify and nurture talent with the end goal that they will be accepted into the US Collegiate system.

The ASM team will be led by Adam, with Roelof Roelofse, Monique Smit and W Welgemoed making up the rest of the team. They will be permanently situated at the range and will be very willing to help with some handy tips and lessons for those who need them! We have many exciting events planned with the team, so I look forward to unveiling those soon!

The 8th wetland was filled up over the course of last week, and on Saturday reached overflow. Some soils will need to be added to retain water on the end near the blue tees. During this week we will see if the level drops because the base of the wetlands needs adequate saturation to retain water and not seep through.

The tees were hollow-tined last week with little disruption. This will help with air and water exchange to help get water down into the root zone.

During the next week we plan to tackle some bunkers for loosening again as part of an on-going process. We are also trimming the bunker edges, mowing the roughs and edging the greens. The weeds that have popped up in the out of play areas will also be tackled during the month.

With the Member/Member event taking place next weekend (17th/18th March), we will be looking to carry out a dusting of sand on the greens. Greens will slow down for a few days due to brooming sand on the greens. This picks the grass up slightly which gives them a hairy look but is mowed out thereafter.

During the next week and a half there will be an application of fertiliser to the tees, fairways and roughs. We hope to complete this in around 3 days.

Click here to learn about how one can incorporate the environmental factors into the golf course. With more environmental pressures on golf courses, we need to work on naturalizing more areas on the course that are not in play and can enhance the look and feel of the course.

This week we are highlighting the severe impact of pitchmarks on our greens. Each ball notes the position of a pitchmark:

Please be mindful of pitch marks and repairing your own as well as any other you may come across.

Keep it on the short stuff!
Rohan

Lift will play a significant part in getting your next flight off the ground. Back spin
generates lift for your golf ball, but how much is too much for you?

Peter Kostis, in a Golf.com instruction piece using Paul Casey, highlighted how
much improvement Casey had made by concentrating not on the latest swing gimmicks but,
but on the good old-fashioned setup and fundamentals.

This article shows Casey’s whole swing in pictures, but take special note of his perfect posture at setup.

Last week we asked you tell us why you think most golfers don’t concentrate on their setup
anywhere near as much as the very best golfers do. This week we’re challenging you to
answer that question for yourself. Is your alignment and posture good enough to give
you a chance of making a good shot? Not sure?
