It happened at last!

On Friday the 23rd of February
more than 150 members and guests arrived at the Club to witness the ceremonial opening of our new course. What are the odds that we would have rain on the 23rd of February in a drought stricken area with level 6 water restrictions!

There was much debate about whether we should continue or not, then the decision was made. Like a wedding that was planned months before, we trotted off , +- 100 strong in the pouring rain to watch our two Presidents, Mike Rose & Midge Cunnington, and two Captains, Craig & Lynn Mackenzie tee off the for the first time on the new 11th. Lucky no “freshies” from any of the above!

It was fantastic to see all the support, all drenched and full of chirps and in high spirit.

We then proceeded to the underpass to cut the ribbon. We filled the underpass with all the spectators and Craig, Mike and Brian Kemlo did the honours. A bottle of champagne finished off the proceedings and all went back to the Clubhouse. The photos tell the whole story!

It surely was a day to remember. I can see people talking in 20 years’ time about the new course opening and they will definitely remember the rain!

The support that day just reiterates the magnificent “GEES” we have at our Club. Thanks to all that attended. May we stay blessed for many a year!

As from tomorrow, we have a new Bar Manager to complement our existing staff and to ensure that our well beloved watering hole stays the flavour of the month and goes from strength to strength.

With the new course and expected increase in rounds we desperately needed a new and strong person!

The only problem is that he is Scottish, so we have the Pro Shop & the bar running under a different flag (only joking!).

Bob Mcilroy is our new man. He has plenty of experience in the restaurant and pub business and I think he’s going to be a great asset to our Club.

Welcome to the family!

The final Sundowner for 2017/2018 is upon us this Friday and at last we are playing it off both nines. Even with the one nine only, this event exceeded all expectations and the support was phenomenal.

Brian Kemlo, Jan Wams and Johan Rademeyer did a fantastic job to ensure everyone was happy and catered for. They even sent off 5 balls to maximise the field, which worked brilliantly.

The Sundowner has created a platform for anyone to come and enjoy a game of golf and they are guaranteed to have a fellow golfer joining them. What a way to meet new friends and start the weekend. Long may the Sundowner live!

Friday we will be treating the players with free drinks on the Course and a some lekker pita bread with fillings. And we will have a DIKSKO afterwards (disco for those that aren’t Afrikaans). Don’t miss this one!

We had our Mixed in aid of Animal Welfare last Sunday and it was a huge success. We even had a morning field as well! Thanks to Craig & Lynn for sponsoring this day, they brought in a lot of money. See below letter from The Animal Welfare.
Thanks to all the members for your support.

New Golf Shoes

Bert, at 85 years old, always wanted a pair of soft spike golf shoes like Freddie Couples, so, seeing some on sale after his round, he bought them. He was so delighted with his purchase, he decided to wear them home to show the missus.

Walking proudly into the house, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, "Notice anything different about me?"
Margaret at age 83, looked him over and replied, "Nope."

Frustrated as all get out, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the new golf shoes. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, "Notice anything different NOW?"

Margaret looked up and said in her best deadpan response, "Bert, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, and it'll be hanging down again tomorrow."

Furious, Bert yells out, "AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?"

"Nope. Not a clue", she replied.

Really annoyed now, he shouted,
"IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW GOLF SHOES!"

Without missing a beat old Margaret replies, "You shoulda bought a new hat".
Have we inspired those of you shooting above 90, to target 89 or less on every occasion this year?
How much better is 16 bogeys and 2 pars (on any Par 72), than what you have to
live with if you’re shooting 95 or higher? So our final tip:

How many 3-putts do you have to suffer each round? Most inexperienced golfers’ cards will reveal 3 or more 3-putts each round. Remove those and you’re 3 shots (or more) closer to 89. So here are two suggestions:

Most 3-putts have, at their root, a poor first putt. Sometimes it’s a poor read.
Sometimes, poor contact. But mostly, less experienced golfers suffer with poor control of speed and distance.
So let’s fix it.

Understanding what will happen in the last feet of the putt will not only lead to more great putts that drop,
it should also leave you with a little thought: an easier 2nd putt.

Every golfer can become a wizard of the greens. There are skills that everyone can learn.
You’ll be amazed at the impact it will have on your scorecard.
