You won't be better looked after...

This weekend we played host to three different groups, and they were all glad they came. All three groups played both courses in the Village and were complimentary of both. Sadly, I heard a cigar-smoking golfer from Joey's couldn't take his smoking outdoors and another lost control of his cart while playing at The Bay. Aside from that, they played hard and played harder, closing local restaurants and pubs in the process.

Our first group of 24, called the Pres-her-dent's Cup, arrived from London to PE and cities in-between. They started here and then played 36 at The Bay, before closing it all out here on Sunday on the lawn, cheering their friends home.

The second group, One-Touch, returned for the second year in a row. They also played here on Sunday and The Bay on Monday. One-Touch is named after their soccer team. So, golf, followed by a fines session, was the order of the day. Legends became their Clubhouse and the St Patrick's vibe fit them perfectly.

The third group, total tea-toters, called themselves the Tequila Tour.

They started at The Bay and came to us on Sunday. Golf appeared to come second to camaraderie with all of the players, though the boys in the blue shirts  (pictured above) won their Ryder Cup and made sure everyone knew it!

My thought: We love having groups come here. In the case of Pres-her-dents, I looked after them for the first time some 17 years ago at Pezula. In most cases, the groups represent reunions of some kind and their reunions seem to be ageless. Turning back the clock to when they all met,  probably returning to the parties of high school or university.

I am in favour of a good time, as long as no one (or thing) gets hurt (or broken), and that they know their place on the course and the estate. When a good time leads to trouble, then the line has been crossed. Keep it fun and fair, with respect for the great game of golf and those who play it!

I'm sure Piri, John and Lance all got a little extra from the boys! They all loved the music, the food and the vibe!

Take note of the gear! Looking good, boys!

  Club Champs - May 5 and 6

Our annual Club Champs will be taking place on the 5th and 6th of May. Put it in your diaries!

The Rules Modernization Initiative

How the Rules of Golf are Revised

Ever since the first known written Rules of Golf in 1744, continuous revision and updating of the Rules has been one of the enduring traditions in golf. (See our background paper A Brief History of Revisions to the Rules of Golf: 1744 to 2016)

The USGA and The R&A became the governing bodies for the Rules in the 1890s, and since 1952 we have together produced a single set of Rules for golfers everywhere. Our individual Rules of Golf Committees and our Joint Rules Committee meet several times each year to consider changes.

We normally revise the Rules of Golf every four years and the decisions on the Rules of Golf (our interpretive guidance) every two years. The 2016 editions of the Rules and Decisions are now in effect and will continue to be in effect until 31 December 2018.

These regular processes tend to focus on individual issues, but there also are times when we step back to look at the Rules from a broader perspective. Such fundamental reviews led to the first consolidated Rules code in 1899, a major Rules revision in 1934, the first unified R&A/USGA Rules code in 1952, and a full reorganization of the Rules in 1984. Each fundamental review had its own motivations and goals, but the common thread was that the time had come for a major review and revision of the Rules. This is such a time.

Our last Get-together was on March 9th - We provided the members in attendance with updates on our tasks at hand!

Mr and Mrs Fuchs joined me in presenting the way forward for recycling. The show of hands indicated a strong positive response for providing the service to our residents. It involves obtaining a skip that will be based at the maintenance area for the members to drop off their recycling items in clear bags that will be available for puchase (at cost) in the Pro Shop. The only charge will be for the skip and the transporting. This amount will be shared by the participating residents. A mail will follow with the details.

In other news, interested parties read the hard copy of the SSEG (Small Scale Embedded Energy) plan and shared their comments. This will be finalized soonest. Next month, Jonathon Hodgson from Specialized Solar Sysyems will be here to present valuable information about green solutions. Glovent hardware has approved by the Board - this concludes nearly a year's worth of investigation into the best tools for communication to our members. It will also provide the mechanism for the homeowners to take responsibility for their guests and service providers through the APP. SMS's with pincodes will replace phone calls and cards. A number of members were taken by Kevern to the Impophu Dam for and educational.  Norman Dyer shared the members' thanks for the trip. Property clearing will commence soon as we have pruchased a powerful chipper. This will enable property owners to remove Slangbos, Blombos and Bitou from their vacant stands for a fraction of the cost. We will intially be creating larger firebreaks on the north west boundary of the Estate, before starting with the plots. There is a good possibility that the chipper may be a viable solution for homeowner garden refuse as well (watch this space). Bart Logie will be launching his 10th book at a special launch at 6pm on Monday, 2 April and Clive Horlock will be presenting an updated version of Walking with the Bushmen with an accompanying African meal on 20 March at 7pm.

Our first Property Owner Forum will be hosted by our homeowner Dirsctors, Tim Elliott, Norman Dyer and Chris Kelway on March 27. This is your opportunity to share ideas and concerns for the Board before their next meeting in early May.

Club News centers on the growth of golf as experienced another record month on the links. Internationals from all over the world joined our members and locals, bringing nearly 2500 rounds in February. Thus number is up slightly on last year. Golfers came from Austraila, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and Zimbabwe. Oh, they also came from all of SA! That makes 22 countries that we know of! Wow, pretty cool, hey!

Next get-together - April 12

Every Great shot starts with a SMILE!
Santa and the Links Team

There are many variables that impact on the backspin created at impact.
Understanding some simple physicshelps us to get to the right combination of
launch angle, ball speed, and spin rate to add 20+ metres to your tee shot.

What if I told you that in many cases, fat or thin contact, or a swing-path-club-face-relationship
creating a fade or slice, can be traced to poor posture with incorrect bend and tilt at address?

Kellie Stenzel, in a Golf.com instruction video, aimed at golfers with an inclination to hit fat iron shots,
goes straight to your posture and upper body bend at setup, as a major cause of this problem.
Watch the video now with a good tip for an in-round checkup you can continually make.

Stenzel has a good tip in her video, but the question is, if you were asked to pull a Driver, and then a hybrid,
and then a #7 iron out of your bag and set up correctly each time; would you have the knowledge of the
key check points to a good setup?
Not sure?
