Club Champs…
The Club Championship was played on a cold and windy weekend.
The conditions were extremely difficult and congratulations to all the prize winners, but especially to the Zwartkop Club Champion for 2018, Brent Goddard who shot a fantastic 67 in round one. Runner-up Robin Ashby, shot a 69 in round 2. Brent’s 146 was two shots better that Robin for the two rounds.

Thanks to our Captain Chris Delport; starters Francois Anderson and Stephen Texeira plus Joe, Ian and Vusi in the golf shop, Dennis and Sharon Bruyns for the scoring and Jannie and his greenkeeping staff. We appreciate all your hard work this weekend in making the event run smoothly.

We’d also like to say a special thank you to our sponsors – Srixon, Aquavita; Pringles & The Biltong Shoppe.

The B, C, Ladies and Seniors will play their second round on Saturday. Click here to access the Full Leaderboard.

Keep in mind that the top 16 gross scores in each Division will play in the Matchplay Championships on 23rd & 24th June.

Great to see…
We were thrilled to see one of our long-time members, Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba enjoying a round of golf with his wife on Sunday afternoon. Mayor Mashaba has played golf for many years and used to be a regular at the club playing with his wife and children.

Gauteng North Junior…
Gauteng North held a Junior event at Zwartkop on Sunday afternoon. It was great to see 60-odd youngsters out playing golf instead of being glued to the TV! Well-done to Dean Wilken from Silver Lakes who shot a 71. “Home boys” Marco Anderson finished second on 72 while Carel Cronje won the B-Division.

Boss of Bar
Despite injury and illness affecting her colleagues, Tracey took on her Mexican themed Boss of the Bar with gusto! She had Catherine plied more than a few people with Pang shooters while Pringles were the base for our nachos!

Sanlam Cancer Challenge & Shavathon
Next Saturday, 2nd June is the Sanlam Cancer Challenge and to coincide with that we will be having a Shavathon.

If you really want to shave your head in support we will charge you R90 (men) but if you simply want to show your support with a colour spray – R20 for men & R30 for ladies – you will still be doing your bit for Cancer! All the money raised on the day will go to Cancer so bring all your friends and family down between 08h00 – 14h00!

Otway & Glenn Hayes Mixed Scramble
Next Sunday, 3rd June, Adam, Ian and their choice of two lady partners will throw down the challenge with two pizza’s up for grabs after golf. If you lose to them, then sorry - then you have to buy your own pizza! There’s still the Mixed Trophy up for grabs though and prizes for that, so make sure you diarise the date! Affiliated Visitors pay R280 including the comp fee.

There are really quick ways we can improve your short game control,
and we’ll look at what we can do in under 5 minutes.

To give you the control you need on a 30 metre pitch,
we will be looking to get you above 4000 RPM.

If you’re below this magic number on a 30 metre pitch shot,
then we’ve got work to do together.

We want you to improve your score on Par 3’s.
Part of that is avoiding 5’s, 6’s and even worse.
Sometimes the hole designer is looking to harm your scorecard.
Consider this real Par 3 (it’s the 200 metre+ 12th on White River Country Club):

Simple Tip #4
Sometimes a Par 3 is really a Par 4. Play it that way.
The vast majority of golfers should lay up in the safe area,
and then pitch the ball up onto the green.
It’s probably a 4, a chunked chip might mean a 5, but it could be a 3.
But out of bounds, and you’re playing 3 from the tee.
In the water and you’re playing 3 from a drop zone that forces you to skirt the water again.
Now about that chunked chip shot…

Billy Casper was a great golfer.
It’s worth noting that, in his
1 stroke 1959 US Open victory
at Winged Foot, he laid up in
every round on the Par 3 17th.

You’ll be faced with a course management challenge on all approach shots,
not just Par 3’s. Try playing a round where you take a ‘safety first’ approach to every shot.
Check out your score. Is it an improvement if you play within yourself?
Course management is an important part of your game; if you’d be interested
in an accompanied round to help with your course management,
