In a recent conversation with Bob Vokey and his associate Aaron Dill it was revealed that PGA Tour Players change their wedges almost weekly. When asked how often PGA Tour Players change their wedges Dill said, “it depends upon the week, the terrain, and the nature of the green complexes.” “For the average golfer, who routinely practices between play, wedges should last about 75 rounds. After that the grooves experience a degree of degradation that influences the roll-out of the shot.”

Here at Sawgrass with the sand base in the practice areas this calculation may need to be adjusted down slightly. As grooves wear, the first skip tends to elongate and the ball will tend to run-out making players believe their wedge goes further than it actually does. This impacts decisions regarding shots that need to carry water or false fronts.

All the major manufacturers have introduced new wedges, including Bob Vokey’s SM7 Series.

Come into the shop and check them out.

Laura Dobbs
2018 First Lady's Cup Champion

Consistency and resilience proved to be a winning combination as Laura Dobbs secured the First Lady's Cup with two similar scores in very different conditions. She had rounds of 74 net on South/East and 73 net on East/West for a total of 147 that was two clear of her nearest competitor. She, along with 21 other ladies, were rewarded for enduring the cool and damp first round conditions with a nearly perfect day. Diana Stewart took advantage, improving on her first round by 11 strokes with a net 69 that earned her second overall and first in the Martha Flight. A group of three was just one stroke behind at 150. This included Delores Adams and Indu Sapra in the Eleanor Flight and Gleith Mann in the Jackie Flight. Roseanne Corrigan earned the Bess Flight title with the lowest second round net score and the biggest comeback of the event, an impressive 24 strokes. Thanks to all who played for making an excellent competition!

Before moving onto upcoming events, we would like to recognize our very own Chris Hunt for winning the Jacksonville Women's Golf Association Senior Championship! This event was played in three rounds, each at a different course around Jacksonville. Next up on our play day schedule is Variable Best Ball on Tuesday, February 20th. Nineteen teams are signed up for the SWGA Member-Member (3/6, 3/8, and 3/9) and there is room for plenty more. Finally, the registrations are streaming in for the Inaugural Sawgrass Classic. Don't delay to get your registration in for this new invitational event before it fills up.

Peter Kostis, in a Golf.com instruction piece using Paul Casey, highlighted how
much improvement Casey had made by concentrating not on the latest swing gimmicks but,
but on the good old-fashioned setup and fundamentals.

This article shows Casey’s whole swing in pictures, but take special note of his perfect posture at setup.

Last week we asked you tell us why you think most golfers don’t concentrate on their setup
anywhere near as much as the very best golfers do. This week we’re challenging you to
answer that question for yourself. Is your alignment and posture good enough to give
you a chance of making a good shot? Not sure?
