| The birds are chirping, and the sun is shining; the weather is perfect to enjoy your day on the golf course. After an errant tee shot, you find yourself in a bunker. Not only do you have the lip the maneuver around, but you find the bunker trampled without proper conditioning. Foot prints everywhere without a single mark from the tooth rake laying outside of the hazard. All you can ask is “WHY?".
Please consider your fellow members and their guests. It is expected after hitting a bunker shot that you condition the bunker back to how you found it. Rakes are provided on each hole, several bunkers with two rakes. Please take the time to use them.
Please consider the following while playing out of a bunker:
| • Enter from the lowest side nearest the golf ball and be careful that you don’t displace sand near the face or the edge of the bunker • Bring a rake into the bunker with you as you prepare for your shot • After you hit, rake the area you played from as well as footprints and any others within reach. • If the divot and/or footprints are deep, use the back (smooth) side of the rake to fill them in, then use the front (with the tines) side of the rake to smooth out the area. • Rake your footprints as you back out of the bunker, so when you leave the hazard, the entire area is clean. • While the Rules of Golf don’t specify leaving a rake in vs. out of the bunker, the USGA recommends leaving the rake outside the hazard, with the handle parallel to the line of play. • If playing from a greenside bunker, it’s good etiquette to tap the bottom of your shoes once you are out of the bunker to get rid of excess sand before you walk on the green. Even if you wear spike-less shoes. • Lend a helpful hand to your playing partner by raking for them to keep pace with the groups ahead. |
Repairing ball marks, sanding divots, and raking bunkers are in consideration for the players following. These expectations are part of the etiquette and courtesy of the game of golf and should always be observed.
Please review the USGA video linked here.
Conditions were ideal for low scoring as many players made a strong last push for their team. Gleith Mann and Mary Lou Bannon made the strongest push with the day's leading point total of 41 on West/South, each supporting the Yellow Team. Their fellow team member, Sarah Phillips, had the top point total on the South/East rotation with 38 points. Indu Sapra (Red Team, Second Flight) and Trace Duryea (Blue Team, Fourth Flight) rounded out the day's flight winners with 36 and 37 points, respectively. Stay tuned to for final team scoring updates from your captains, and visit the SWGA Web Site link above for complete results.
The next SWGA event is the Annual Cancer Tournament on Monday, April 9th. It's not too late to support this year's cause. Please contact Hank Dettlaff ASAP in the golf shop (273-3720) to inquire about adding another team, sponsorship, or other ways you can help.
The following day, we will have a Better Ball of Partners play day. Sign-up on ForeTees with a partner or as a single and allow us to find you a partner.
