2018 Season Long Match Play Championships finalists, Harlan Gardiner (left) and Bill Hronek (right) |
On Wednesday, April 18, the final match of the 2018 Season Long Match Play Championship was contested between Bill Hronek and Harlan Gardiner.
This year’s Men’s Season Long Match Play featured 64 players from the white tees and 21 from the green tees in separate brackets. In the green tee flight, Alan Kaur defeated Murray Ruffell and Charlie Romain in the finals for the overall honors in late March.
In the Championship Flight, Bill Hronek defeated Drew Bair, Tom Browne, Mike Wicks, Gary Healy and Doug Miller to Harlan Gardiner in the finals. On the road to the finals, Harlan defeated Roy Edwards, Ken Schultz, Lou Pontigo, John Fawcett and Jerry Lindberg.
|
The match was favorable for both Harlan and Bill early on until Bill holed a putt from off the green on #8 East to go one up. The moment seemed to turn the match as Mr. Hronek pared holes #10-14 to advance to 4 up and get to dormie on the 15th tee box.
There Mr. Gardiner saved par to push the match to #16, where Hronek closed out the match with a par on #16 to earn the 3 & 2 victory.
Bill Hronek, 2018 Match Play Champion |

2018 Ladies Club Championship April 17, 19, & 20, 2018 Individual Medal Play Thank you for all who participated in the 2018 Ladies Club Championship. The opening round of the 2018 Ladies Club Championship began with deceptively calm conditions that gave way to a stiff breeze and speedy greens. Donna Fiedorowicz and Chris Hunt swimmingly weathered the conditions on East/West, separating themselves from the field with rounds of 77 and 78, respectively. Their matching net scores of 71 were the lowest in the field, equaled only by Marge Monteith in the Third Flight. We look forward to the continuation of play Thursday morning on the West/South rotation! Final round scheduled for South/East beginning at noon on Friday, April 20, 2018. For those not competing, please feel free to come out and watch. Green Tee Policy: In the spirit of “tee it forward,” the golf committee has dropped the green tee “age plus handicap formula". Instead play from the green tees is at the discretion of the player. In all events, other than Championships where play from certain teeing grounds is defined in the format, gentlemen players have the option to play from the teeing ground of their choice. For most events handicaps will be established from the white tees and handicap adjustments will take effect under paragraph 3-5 of the handicap manual.
‘Golf is meant to be enjoyed and part of the enjoyment is the ability to reach greens in regulation and putt for birdie – at least on occasion.’
Golf Instruction: The golf swing is meant to be an athletic movement. Players should be able to perform it with the same ease as they throw a ball or toss a frisbee or a horseshoe. These are fundamental athletic motions. All of them are built around the concept of “opposite hand, opposite foot.” The idea is to plant the lead foot and move the weight on top of it, to propel the opposite hand forward in the direction of the target. In golf most players think of the clubhead back to the body – swing the clubhead to hit the ball. The challenge of the clubs, and for that matter the game, is to essentially do the exact opposite. Move your body into position to use your arms to swing the club. Think of a baseball pitcher, first the pitcher winds up, then he strides onto his front leg, then he turns his body, then he throws his arm, then he releases the ball. This very sequence takes place in the golf swing.
In golf, like in most sports, this motion is rotary. Start facing perpendicular to the target, wind up by turning your back (toward the target) and moving the club “away” (from the target), then plant the lead leg and turn the body and then swing the club through as you hit. So as you practice think of throwing a ball. One added thought, when you throw your throw to your catcher, think of golf as a game of catch with your target.
To work on building an athletic golf swing schedule time with a member of the Sawgrass Professional Staff.
Good luck and good golfing.
Operations: New “apple crates” for the practice tee. These crates are there to clean-up the appearance of the practice area and to help you “pace your practice.” Rather than turning the crate over, tap the side and let just a few balls exit. Take you time and play shots from the practice tee, it’s more about quality than quantity.
