Putt for dough!

This week’s Stockton Cup, and the Match Play (Match-Around) format got me to thinking, ‘what’s better than making a putt when your opponent(s) have already counted you out?’ Not much. The feeling is one that’s hard to duplicate – think of Michael Jordan or Lebron James hitting that last minute 3 to win, the prom king or queen saying “yes,” the name (or student #) at the top of the grade sheet being yours – it’s an adrenaline rush and a momentum killer for you opponent(s).

I learned to putt from my grandmother. She was 4’10” tall and she could putt the eyes out of it. She taught me that putting isn’t a matter of strength of body, but more strength of spirit. To be a great putter takes imagination and spirit. It takes focus. To putt great your focus needs to be on where you are going. Sure, better strokes open the door to more consistency – but nothing rolls like a ball - and perfect strokes often don’t make more putts than average strokes when the putter is in the hands of a player with great imagination and determination.

I was once told “great players glare at their target and glance at their ball.” For average players that is usually just the opposite – they glance at their target and stare at their ball. My golfing youth was spent watching Jack Nicklaus essentially “stalk” his putts. His eyes focused, his demeanor that of a hunter, he seemed to make putts by willing them into the hole.

I suggest that you can be a better putter simply by changing your focus. Build a routine around your target line. Let your eyes rest on the high point of your line, then let your eyes tell your feet where to stand, then let your eyes (and the target they are staring at) tell your arms where to swing, and let your eyes tell your hands what to feel. Finally let go. Let your mind be open to good things happening. As the saying goes, ‘if you think you can you might; if you think you can’t you won’t.’

Good luck and good golfing.

Donna Fiedorowicz
2018 Ladies Club Champion

The 2018 Ladies’ Club Championship concluded on this cool and windy afternoon....

The challenging conditions proved no match for Donna Fiedorowicz’ steady play. Ms. Fiedorowicz carded a 76 over the South/East rotation for a total of 233 over the three days of play.

The championship’s opening round had defending champion Chris Hunt trailing Ms. Fiedorowicz by a single shot after shooting 78. On day two of the event, where players had to contend with the legendary Sawgrass winds, Ms. Fiedorowicz was able to put some space between herself and the six-time winner. Ms. Hunt demonstrated her competitive spirit by opening the third round with a birdie, but an outgoing nine 37 by Ms. Fiedorowicz made the deficit one that was just too much to overcome.

This year’s event featured over 30 contestants who endured the cool temperatures and significant winds. These 30 plus players divided into four flights. Please congratulate our winners:

Best Ball In/Best Ball Out/Best 18
Results

Over forty ladies turned out to play Best Ball In/Best Ball Out/Best 18, a format where competitors could win with their front nine, back nine, and overall scores. Billie Rawot added an exclamation point to the end of the 2017-2018 SWGA Play Day series with the low overall net score of 69, low East Nine score of 34 net, and an excellent 35 net on South that was just edged out by Peggy Widicus and Barbara Mulcahy's matching 34s. Over on the West/South rotation, Marge Monteith earned the top 18-hole prize with matching nines of 36 net. Mary Lou Bannon and Phyllis Peter-Mallard shared the low front nine in this division, each with 35 net. Overall, thirteen ladies earned a share of the day's purse. Please visit the results link above to see all the winners and complete results.

Next week, we conclude the season with Closing Day. We already have 88 ladies signed up to compete a 2 Net Best Ball competition and celebrate a great season. We welcome additional teams and are happy to help pair up singles and partial teams. We would also like to remind you not to miss a special chance to get a taste of France paired with camaraderie on the golf course during this year's Mixed Member-Guest on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Please visit ForeTees to sign-up for both events. Have a great week!

Green Tee Policy:
In the spirit of “tee it forward,” the golf committee has dropped the green tee “age plus handicap formula". Instead play from the green tees is at the discretion of the player. In all events, other than Championships where play from certain teeing grounds is defined in the format, gentlemen players have the option to play from the teeing ground of their choice. For most events handicaps will be established from the white tees and handicap adjustments will take effect under paragraph 3-5 of the handicap manual.

Golf is meant to be enjoyed and part of the enjoyment is the ability to reach greens in regulation and putt for birdie – at least on occasion.’

The Fairway Wood is probably as difficult a
club to hit as any in the bag.

It’s hugely useful if you can hit it consistently,
but almost a waste of space in
the bag if you can’t.

So improvements in face technology to
increase forgiveness across
the face are welcome.

The fitting and setup of this club
is critically important. Everything you can
do to make sure the ball launches easily
and accurately, should be done.
That includes investing time to find the
shaft that translates difficult into easy.

An assessment and fitting is of
paramount importance.

Make sure the Fairway Woods and Hybrids in your bag are as easy to use as possible, and integrated
so that you have no big distance gaps or overlap from the clubs at the top of your bag.

Where in the levels above ‘inexperienced’ do you sit?

Which level are you at? If you want to shoot lower scores, then improving your
level is the easiest and quickest way to get there.

We’d strongly recommend booking in for a short game assessment with us.
Get your technique checked and let’s see where improvements can be made to get you to Graduate,
Master or Wizard, whichever is your next level. Bring a friend or friends.
This is great fun in a group.
