A special visit to the club recalled great memories for past Sawgrass Country Club director of golf, Bobby Greenwood.

Mr. Greenwood was the host professional for the 1977 and 1978 Players Championship. It was a pleasure to hear the stories of “old Sawgrass” during his short visit. Mr. Greenwood is pictured above with director of golf, Ron Philo, Jr. Mr. Greenwood resides in Tennessee with his wife and daughter.

Great memories! It is so wonderful to see how Sawgrass has grown and improved. The PGA staff showed the warm hospitality and professionalism that makes me proud to have been the Director of Golf 1977 and 1978.” ~ Bobby Greenwood

The 2018 Stockton Cup, Sawgrass’ Men’s Member-Member Championship, was held on April 26th through 28th.

Sixty (60) two-man teams competed in the annual Four-ball match play round robin event for the top honor. The tournament honors the founder of the Sawgrass community, Jimmy Stockton. Mr. Stockton took some Florida scrub land, a vision, and a well thought out plan and created Sawgrass Country Club, a lasting gift that has kept on giving.

After 45-holes of competition, our winners of each flight, named after the Sawgrass neighborhoods, joined on #6 East to compete for the overall honor.

The ten flight winners for this year were:

Chuck Smith and Mike Dennis, Old Barn Flight Champions

Scott Dippel and Nick Zagaria, Walker’s Ridge Flight Champions

Mark Kontny and Mike Jay, Deer Run Flight Champions

Roy Edwards and Paul Young, Lake Kathryn Flight Champions

Billy Smith and Bruce Glassick, Lake Julia Flight Champions

Ron Krogh and Gregg Deiboldt, Willow Pond Flight Champions

Tom Petrie and Peter Maguire, Preston Trail Flight Champions

Tyler Dann and Tom Bray, Fisherman’s Cove Flight Champions

Mo Taaffe and Dick Beltson, Tifton Cove Flight Champions

Craig Wisotzki and Peter Douglas, Osprey Point Flight Champions

Advancing from #6 with pars or better were the teams of Billy Smith & Bruce Glassick, Peter Maguire & Tom Petrie, Gregg Deiboldt & Ron Krogh, Paul Young & Roy Edwards, Nick Zagaria & Scott Dippel, and Mike Jay & Mark Kontny.

Billy Smith & Bruce Glassick
, Peter Maguire & Tom Petrie, Gregg Deiboldt & Ron Krogh, and Paul Young & Roy Edwards advanced on #7.

On #8 East, Billy Smith & Bruce Glassick and Tom Petrie & Peter Maguire advanced. Billy Smith hit a fine chip for partner Bruce to hole. Peter Maguire nearly knocked the flag out of the hole with his approach leaving partner Tom Petrie a good attempt off the back fringe. The two teams played in on #9 East. Billy set Bruce in the middle of the fairway on the drive. Bruce covered the hazard leaving Billy in the bunker. Without issue, Billy’s short game positioned the team for the win over Peter Maguire and Tom Petrie.

Please join us in recognizing our 2018 Stockton Cup Champions, Bruce Glassick and Billy Smith.

Thank you to all participants for playing, and the many spectators on East. Congratulations to our champions! Click here for results summary.

After experiencing nearly every kind of weather, except maybe snow, 89 ladies were treated to a nearly perfect May day on the South/East rotation to wrap up the 2017-2018 SWGA season. The play of Gleith Mann, Eileen Hanna, Marge Monteith, and Indu Sapra was as nice as the weather. As a team, they posted the lowest score of the day in the 2 Net Best Ball competition, an impressive 25-under 119. Please congratulate the other flight winners pictured above and visit the SWGA website for complete results.

Following play, we recognized year-long accomplishments. Roseanne Corrigan earned the Most Improved Award as she shaved 5.5 strokes off of her handicap index over the course of the season and has reached her all time low since establishing her handicap. The Ringer prizes were also awarded for the year to players in five flights. Chris Hunt and Donna Fiedorowicz tied for the lowest overall with a ringer total of 94 (-14) over all 27 holes. They also topped the Birdies competition with fourteen and thirteen different holes birdied, respectively.

Thank you to all our SWGA members for helping make this a memorable season. We look forward to starting back up in September and hope to see many of you at the course for our new SWGA Summer Series (Weekly Individual Stableford Starting May 24th, stay tuned... a full announcement is coming soon) and representing Sawgrass in Summer Team. For a short time, Sawgrass Country Club has the 53-piece Titleist Vokey Design Wedge matrix. These wedges feature a bounce and loft that matches your game and our course conditions as well as three unique grinds. These grinds are built around the way you play short shots. “Sweepers” who have little wrist hinge will find the “S” grind (named for Steve Stricker) much to their liking, for those who are more creative the “D” grind offers heal relief to allow you the opportunity to lay the wedge down and open up the face to hit those soft high shot that land like a butterfly with sore feet. The “F” grind is more traditional with uniform bounce along the sole.

On Wednesday, May 9th, Director of Golf, Ron Philo, Jr.-PGA is hosting a wedge clinic to discuss the designs to identify the right setup for your game. Call the Golf Shop to register or book a fitting appointment with a member of the professional staff.

The chicken and the egg remains the perennial question.
It never seems considered that the chicken might not lay the egg, or that the egg might not hatch.

Which comes first: the improved swing or a set of fitted Irons?
How many of you this year will invest in a game improvement program to
fundamentally change and improve your golf swing?
If that’s a commitment you want to make,

However, whether you’re going to improve your swing or not, we want the egg to hatch.
Golf equipment that fits improves your golf experience immediately.

Almost every golfer we custom fit for a set of Irons notes at least one dimension of measurable improvement.
Those with higher handicaps and the less skilled often see two, or even three,
dimensions of measurable improvement, IMMEDIATELY.
What could your improvement be?

We want you to get more out of your practice. We want you to see the results.
We want you to enjoy practice. The secret is practising with more purpose.

There is time for ‘block practice’. That’s trying to hit the same shot time after time.
You’ll probably have a technique improvement you’re working on.

Even when you’re engaged in a very specific ‘block practice’, you should approach it with real
focus and concentration on each shot.

Before each shot, take a practice swing noting the feeling or movement you’re trying to re-enforce.

Now take your real shot, with your attention being on the process – not the shot result.
Did you feel or note the movement you were trying to make?

You’re better off hitting 50 shots carefully with 100% concentration on the improvement you’re trying to make,
than hitting 100 shots with even 80% concentration. Unsure of when to use block or random practice, then
