This week I thought it appropriate to start the process of letting everyone know about the new Handicap System. GolfRSA visited the Club this week to host a workshop for us, as well as the surrounding clubs. I am quite upbeat about the changes and when implemented, I think it is going to be a fair system.

To start with, there will be no reference to the existing tee structures - pro’s, men's, seniors and ladies. There will be only color indexes - red, blue, white and yellow. Each set of tees has their own slope indexes and course ratings and you will all be free to play any tee you wish. That means that there will be no deductions for playing forward tees, and we can all play in the same competition together as the new system should even out the playing fields.

September 3rd is the big day that your handicap system and calculation will change. It is an odd date, but the 3rd falls on a Monday, so your weekend doesn't start chaotically. Good decision there, I think!

Handicaps as we know them today will disappear as the new system will work off a handicap index. Each player will continue to enter their every score, and the handicap system will calculate the player's handicap based on the course and the tee the player selects to play.

The calculation for those interested is as follows:
Handicap index = (Adjusted gross score-course rating) x 113 divided by slope rating.

So when you play you will enter The Pro Shop as you do normally, register, swipe your card (see sneak peak to your left) and enter the tee you are going to play from on that day. The system will then automatically give you your course handicap, which is what you will play from on the day. There will also be conversion charts on the board to help you make the strategic decision as from which tees you will play from.

The course handicap = Handicap index (at start of play) x slope rating divided by 113 + (course rating - par). The course handicap is the handicap the player will use to complete their scorecard.

This all seems very complicated, but you will quickly pick it all up! We will make sure everyone understands before the time comes.

Eric Leftson is the man tasked with the Western Cape roll out and he will also be available for questions. He made a good analogy at the seminar: You don’t have to know how a microwave works, you just put your food in and it works! Likewise, you actually don’t have to know how this is calculated as your handicap will be given to you when you book in. A frequently asked question that I do get is: How are conditions going to affect my handicap? This is a referral to the dynamic slope index which at the moment we are not using. That is due to be introduced in 2020. The main advantages of the new system are outlined in a poster which we have put up on the main board.

This is an old one, but still good!

Larry is in hospital with his friend Bill who is very ill and doesn’t have much time left.

Larry says to his friend, “Listen Bill when you get up to heaven, if there are golf courses come back and let me know”.

Bill feebly agrees. During the night Bill passes away and early morning Larry hears Bill’s voice in the dark. “Larry I have some good news and bad news for you, the courses up here are the best I’ve ever seen! The bad news you’re teeing off early Tuesday!”

Think about the Par 3’s you play. What is the distance that you just don’t have covered in your bag?
For most golfers, there will be a point between 170 metres and 210 metres where they just don’t have
the club to hit the target distance.

Some of you may even have a club to get to the green, but find you’re just not able to stop the ball.
Your mis-hit is short; your perfect strike, through the back.

The higher lofted Fairway Wood is a great solution for a regular to slower swing speed golfer. The deeper CoG, and usually lower profile, helps to get the ball higher with a steeper landing trajectory. The ball stops quicker.

Bring your problem distance to us. Let us spend time whether improving your technique with an existing club,
or filling the gap with a better solution. Come and spend 45 minutes with us,
and let’s see how best to fill that gap.

If you’re playing golf, outside of a competition, then it’s your rules that count.

If you’ve got some less experienced golfers in your four-ball, you’ll be surprised how much more they enjoy
the round if you play a “scramble drive”. That’s where everyone tees off, but you all play your second
shot from the position of the best tee shot.

You can still have friendly competition, but it’s likely that this is a much more social format:
you come together on the tee; for the 2nd shot; and on the green. That’s more fun together.

Try it. Try and think of different ways to play the game, to allow the less skilled the opportunity to
get much more enjoyment from the experience.

And if you need help finding more fairways on your own, then

Until next week have a great one.

Cheers,
Julz and the team
