Greetings once more from a cold Hermanus! The weather we have been having has been extremely mixed, as cold as the Arctic and as warm as Bermuda, all be it for only one day! Anyway, it's great to see the rain and we pray for much, much more. There are even more water restrictions in place for our town now, so let's all be water sensitive!

This week I am going to talk about one of the best golfers that has come out of our Club in recent years, 19 year old Tyron Davidowitz. Tyron has been at Hermanus Golf Club for a long time now. He started playing at 6 years old and in just one short year of playing recorded his first hole-in-one, aged 7! I remember it so well, there was much excitement in the Club that day!

He has won the Junior Championships twice and our Club Championships for the last three years in a row. This year he has again been selected for the premier Boland interprovincial side to play in Johannesburg later in the year, which is fantastic news!

Tyron has won 10 junior tournaments all over the country, including two Opens at Citrusdal and Ceres. Last year he was picked for the Golf RSA Junior Team which played at Atlantic Beach with a number of senior provincial sides, at that time he was ranked 5th in South Africa! He has his dreams as many youngsters have of winning a major or two, especially his favorite, The Masters! But unlike many young people his age, he actually stands a chance!

He has a full team backing him, headed up by Club member Desmond Sauls organising daily arrangements, myself for his swing and golf skills, Mathew Brown and Riaan Scheinder for his gym, strengthening and agility needs and Hermanus Golf Club as his practice and polishing ground.

So from all of us at the Golf Club, well done Tyron on your attaining a spot in the IPT side, good luck and I’m sure you will do us proud!

Tyron also has his eyes set on the professional circuit and has already put his name down for tour school next March, which is a grueling time to sieve out a small number of players to join the guys on the main South African Tour. On the off chance there is anyone interested in helping financially with this young man’s future, please mail me on golf@hermanus.co.za

This week we had an informal mixed played on Sunday and our intrepid Lady Captain managed to bag her very first hole-in-one! Congratulations Pat van Renen!

It was on the the 4th hole and the weapon of choice was a 6 iron, many congratulations! May you get many more.

Fertility technology has certainly come a long way...

With all the new technology regarding fertility, an 88-year-old woman was able to give birth to a baby recently. When she was discharged from the hospital and went home, various relatives came to visit.

"May we see the new baby?" one of them asked.
"Not yet", said the mother. "I'll make coffee and then we can visit for a while."

Another half hour passed before another relative asked, "may we see the new baby now?"
"No, not yet," said the mother.

A while later the guests asked again, "may we see the baby now?"
"No, not yet," replied the mother.

Growing impatient, they asked, "well, when can we see the baby?"

"When it cries!" she told them.

"When it cries?" they gasped. "Why do we have to wait until it cries?"

"Because, I forgot where I put it."

We love our senior citizens!

Course designers are clearly
in league with golf ball manufacturers.

How many golf courses have a
Par 3, about 5 Iron distance,
with water on the right?

They know that an Iron over 38“
long and less than 28° of loft
has a good chance of going right.

Ten years ago, we told you that your
4 Iron loft had strengthened to become
the same loft as the previous year’s 3 Iron.
Your 5 Iron will today will have the same
loft as that 3 Iron.
Without question, most golfers ought to be
replacing their 5 Iron with a Hybrid.
They should be investing in improving
their technique. And smiling as they walk
up to their ball on the green. It makes it easier
to enjoy the geese! It also means you’re
buying less golf balls.

Bring your problem distance to us. Let us spend time whether improving your technique with an existing club,
or filling the gap with a better solution. Come and spend 45 minutes with us,
and let’s see how best to fill that gap.

We want more golfers to have a great experience out on the golf course.

To do that, you don’t have to take on the same challenge as
Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen, Shangsan Feng or Lexi Thompson.
In fact, you already don’t play the same length golf course they do.

So, let’s play more formats that make it more enjoyable for more golfers.

PGA Junior League is a format that combines a competitive element with a game that stays ‘in play’ longer
(2v2 over 3x3 holes), with the playability benefits of a Scramble format.

There are 3 ‘flags’ to be won. If you’re playing 18, why not play 2v2 better ball scramble, over 3x6 holes?

And actually, why not find time to
play nine in this format (3x3 holes),
 before or after your day?

Or nine on a Sunday afternoon
with the family?

You can still have friendly competition, but it’s likely that this is a much more social format:
you come together on the tee; for the 2nd shot; and on the green. That’s more fun together.

Try it. Try and think of different ways to play the game, to allow the less skilled the opportunity to
get much more enjoyment from the experience. Or for you to change it up and enjoy yourself more.

And if you need help finding more fairways on your own, then

Until next week have a great one.

Cheers,
Julz and the team
