It’s almost time for the second men’s Major Championship of the year, The US Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton New York. This year it's taking place from 14 to 17 June. Previous winners at this venue are Raymond Floyd, Corey Pavin and our own Retief Goosen. The course is open to the elements and should prove a much harder challenge than last year and with no really dominant player on the Tour this year, look for an exciting tournament. The obvious question is, “can Tiger win it?" I wouldn’t be at all surprised!

It was great to have Jared Harvey (the original special person) visit to test his new PINGs.

Deborah Andrews has just started taking some golf lessons and was enjoying a little “Après Golf” with Karen Mills at Monica’s. Their kids had a great evening collecting golf balls and were rewarded (for being good) with free magnums.

I would like to recommend Martin Smit as a Golf professional at Mount Edgecombe Golf Academy.

He has been coaching my two children, Nicholas (age 15) Charlotte (age 11), for the last 3 years.

Nick has dropped from a 20 to a 6 handicap over the 3 years whilst Charlotte has dropped from a 33 to 22 over the last 2 years.

They both make golf look super easy!

My children have benefitted hugely from their time with Martin. He has not only has improved their golf but has contributed to the development of the whole child. As part of his programme, they have been involved in goal setting, assessing their achievements, time management, practice routines, nutrition and exercises to support their golf swing. The children learn in a spontaneous way. Discipline and concentration skills are developed unconsciously.

Martin quickly identifies and resolves the errors they make in a positive and confidence building manner. He has all the modern gadgets, which the children love. Golf swing analysis App is used and this has definitely improved their game. They get very excited to compare their swings to that of the professionals. His lessons are a good balance of instruction, competitiveness and fun, in relaxed yet focused manner. His knowledge and insights into the game help extend players as they mature. He also has great golfing events/tournaments for his players at the end of each term. He is available for lessons during the holidays when he is not trying to catch that elusive big fish.

His academy at the Mount Edgecombe Driving range, is a safe environment for the kids. The facilities and environment at the Range are designed such that parents can “drop-off-and-go” or relax and enjoy a cappuccino or a drink in a lovely setting. Once the kids have finished their lesson they can pop into Monica’s for a milkshake and complete their homework.

Martin has an engaging personality and they cannot wait to share what Martin has had so say and all they have learnt from him when they get home. They also love to share both their achievements and their disappointments on the golf course with him. He has inspired their passion for the game. Golfing with Martin at the academy is a quality experience. My children are very privileged to be part of his programme.

Thank you
Greg and Caroline Phipps

Last week our Happy Hour was so successful that we have decided to have one every Friday night!

Kevin Stone shared this with me after returning from watching his son at the Italian Open. It made me smile...

Think about the Par 3’s you play. What is the distance that you just don’t have covered in your bag?
For most golfers, there will be a point between 170 metres and 210 metres where they just don’t have
the club to hit the target distance.

Some of you may even have a club to get to the green, but find you’re just not able to stop the ball.
Your mis-hit is short; your perfect strike, through the back.

The higher lofted Fairway Wood is a great solution for a regular to slower swing speed golfer. The deeper CoG, and usually lower profile, helps to get the ball higher with a steeper landing trajectory. The ball stops quicker.

Bring your problem distance to us. Let us spend time whether improving your technique with an existing club,
or filling the gap with a better solution. Come and spend 45 minutes with us,
and let’s see how best to fill that gap.

If you’re playing golf, outside of a competition, then it’s your rules that count.

If you’ve got some less experienced golfers in your four-ball, you’ll be surprised how much more they enjoy
the round if you play a “scramble drive”. That’s where everyone tees off, but you all play your second
shot from the position of the best tee shot.

You can still have friendly competition, but it’s likely that this is a much more social format:
you come together on the tee; for the 2nd shot; and on the green. That’s more fun together.

Try it. Try and think of different ways to play the game, to allow the less skilled the opportunity to
get much more enjoyment from the experience.

And if you need help finding more fairways on your own, then
