The new World Handicap System due to be implemented on 3 September will bring a few changes. First and foremost, we will use the new handicap system that calculates your course handicap on the day of play based on the course you choose to play. Read more here.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at the different courses at Oubaai and working out what changes need to be made. Both the SAGA and GOLF RSA have requested that clubs attempt to have one stroke rating for all their course offerings i.e. to do away with a separate mens’ and ladies stroke.

This is due to the fact that there is no longer a ladies tee as such, but rather a forward tee. Hence, if Seniors/Juniors/Ladies or if the competition is played off the forward tees for the day, the handicap index and slope rating will adjust each player's Playing Handicap for the day, therefore the need to have a unified stroke rating for all of the club's courses/tees. We will keep you updated with the forthcoming changes.

We are very proud to announce that the Oubaai Open on 15 July officially launches the 2018/2019 Race to Oubaai! We have partnered with various sponsors to create a unique Order of Merit for the SCGU, with the Top 50 of the year's Order of Merit qualifying to play in the last event of the season, The Southern Cape Closed, at Oubaai!

Some of the incentives include a stay at The Oubaai Hotel for the weekend of the tournament, Saturday evening function and entertainment, larger prize pool etc. We will also be showcasing our branding at all of the Open Tournaments around the Southern Cape throughout the year, which will really help boost Oubaai as the total package for golfers and families alike!

Please note that Oubaai will be closed for bookings on 10 June, 16 and 17 June due to SCGU events. Reciprocal arrangements have been made with Kingswood (R230 plus R120 cart) and Pinnacle, Pezula and Simola (R550 incl. seat on cart).

The new menu at the clubhouse has been launched. It has a mouth-watering selection to keep hungry golfers happy and a separate kiddies menu (also available for the grown-up kiddies!) with a selection of toasted sandwiches and chicken strips for the young ones and colour-in activities to keep them busy. Pop in for some lunch and a drink or make it dinner!

Dear Members,

We had more good rain over the weekend, 18mm to be precise! We are moving into winter maintenance mode. This week we are clearing out some of the ponds especially where the bulrushes have taken over.

The greens are making a good recovery albeit slower than anticipated. This week we were cutting at 3mm so the greens should be back to normal speed on Sunday for Southern Cape Women’s Closed Championship.

Work on the bunkers is continuing. We are sifting the sand to get the rocks out and levelling the sand. Please report problematic bunkers to me so we can prioritise them.

Hope to see you on the golf course,
Igor

Think about the Par 3’s you play. What is the distance that you just don’t have covered in your bag?
For most golfers, there will be a point between 170 metres and 210 metres where they just don’t have
the club to hit the target distance.

Some of you may even have a club to get to the green, but find you’re just not able to stop the ball.
Your mis-hit is short; your perfect strike, through the back.

The higher lofted Fairway Wood is a great solution for a regular to slower swing speed golfer. The deeper CoG, and usually lower profile, helps to get the ball higher with a steeper landing trajectory. The ball stops quicker.

Bring your problem distance to us. Let us spend time whether improving your technique with an existing club,
or filling the gap with a better solution. Come and spend 45 minutes with us,
and let’s see how best to fill that gap.

If you’re playing golf, outside of a competition, then it’s your rules that count.

If you’ve got some less experienced golfers in your four-ball, you’ll be surprised how much more they enjoy
the round if you play a “scramble drive”. That’s where everyone tees off, but you all play your second
shot from the position of the best tee shot.

You can still have friendly competition, but it’s likely that this is a much more social format:
you come together on the tee; for the 2nd shot; and on the green. That’s more fun together.

Try it. Try and think of different ways to play the game, to allow the less skilled the opportunity to
get much more enjoyment from the experience.

And if you need help finding more fairways on your own, then
