MAY DAYS
The eyes of the golfing world will once again be on Ponte Vedra Beach this month. The Players will return for its final time in the month of May. One of the contributing factors in moving the tournament back to the March time slot is the unpredictable nature of turfgrass growth in the month of May here in North Florida. In most years, the middle of May is the first time when we can start to look for night time temperatures in the 60’s. This is the key to turfgrass growth in our area. CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE…

Sawgrass Country Club West Nine Bunker Project June 4th-August 14th Project Scope of Work
A portion of the Phase III master facilities plan approved by membership included the updating of the West Nine greenside bunkers. The following is a brief snap-shot of this project.
The bunkers on the West Nine were last renovated in the summer of 2013. At that time, the newest bunker technology available was the Better Billy Bunker System. Under the direction of the golf course architect, Sawgrass was one of the first clubs in the State to utilize this new construction method. As is the case when adopting new technologies, there are always “bugs” to work out.
Following the completion of the West Nine bunkers, and while building the East and South bunkers (2014-2015), the Better Billy Bunker people reached out to Sawgrass. They explained that the original specifications that called for 3”- 4” of bunker sand at the bottoms were receiving less than optimum feedback from the golfing community. The bunkers seemed to be too firm and too wet for the Florida climate. The new recommendation was to install 7” of angled sand to the bottom of the bunker. After consulting with the USGA, GCSAA, GCBAA, and our golf course architect, it became clear that the newest specifications provided a more desirable golfing experience. As a result, the East and South Nine bunkers were built with 7” on the bottom while the West Nine were built with 3”.
The scope of work this summer is to remove the bunker sand from the greenside bunkers on the West Nine and excavate them to the matching depth of the East Course. The faces will be stabilized with a capillary concrete while the drainage at the base will be replaced. This provides for a better draining bunker and a more consistent playing surfaces property wide.
Work begins during the normal maintenance closure period which starts on June 4th. The West Nine is scheduled to remain closed for the summer, reopening following the August maintenance closure.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but assure you that the professional staff and management team of Sawgrass Country Club have met with many industry professionals and all agree this is our most appropriate course of action.
Thank you again for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you on the property.
2018 Aerification Schedule June 4th – 14th July 30th – August 9th
Aerification is very necessary to ensure the long-term health and playability of our turf. We understand how much of an inconvenience this closure can be for those who wish to play golf during this time. The club has made a large commitment to bring the golf course in line with the finest clubs in the Southeast. The expectation for playability and detail has increased in conjunction with the renovations. To ensure conditions equal to or better than the best in the area, the following must be done:
• Vertical mowing, mowing, aerifying, rolling, and sand topdressing of the greens (2.5 days) • Aerifying, vertical mowing, mowing, and blowing off of the fairways (3 days) • Vertical mowing, aerifying, rolling, mowing, and blowing off of tees and approaches (3 days) • Aerifying of the roughs (7 days) • Sand topdressing of the fairways (8 days) • Cleaning up all debris from above processes (4 days) • Bunker maintenance and adjustment of sand levels (4 days) • Fertilizing, mowing, blowing, and readying the golf course for reopening (4 days)
This list presents the main tasks, but it is certainly not a comprehensive list of all that are done. While much of the aerifying is accomplished in the first seven days of closure, the clean-up process takes a significant portion of the second week. Any sacrifice in closure time leads to a course with a significant amount of debris, plugs, and overall poor playing conditions. In order to expedite the above processes, additional equipment is rented, contractors are hired to assist, and temporary labor is brought on board. This closure time allows the maintenance department to accomplish more of the needed processes and reduces further disruption to play. The additional closure time gives the turf extra time to recover without traffic. This leads to better playing conditions once play resumes. For several years we have discussed and studied closure days. They are necessary with the increased standards expected of Sawgrass Country Club.
The aerification process is disruptive to the turf and the golf experience in the short term, but it is very important to protect the long term playability of the course. To provide an outlet for play the golf professional staff is making arrangements with other area clubs. The Golf Maintenance Department thanks you for your understanding and support and we look forward to returning the course to you in the best shape possible.
