Beyond the typical notices to pay attention to speed and limit two passengers to a seat, be aware of weather, especially lightning.

Although many features of you golf cart make it a substitute for a car, your cart is not a car. Your car has certain features that make it relatively* safe from lightning (its metal frame is the primary protective feature), your golf cart does not have a metal frame that surrounds you. Contrary to popular belief the rubber on the tires have no protective qualities.

Please be aware that if your cart is struck by lightning, and you are in it, it is unlikely that you or your passengers will survive.
- A lightning bolt has an estimated temperature of 28,000 Fahrenheit

o This will cause the liquid in the batteries to boil and they will explode
o The plastic and rubber will melt
o The electricity will run through the bodies of the occupants as it attempts to reach the ground.

Please, when lighting is present, and you are alerted by the ThorGuard siren, seek shelter immediately.

* a car’s frame surrounds the passengers, if struck by lightning the charge goes around the frame of the vehicle keeping the passengers safe. This is known as a Faraday effect.

Note: when possible seek shelter indoors, not all cars have metal frames, convertibles do not have an overhead “cage,” and storms have many risks not just lightning. It is a common occurrence to have afternoon thunderstorms this time of year. Many of these storms “pop up” without much warning. We ask that everyone please abide by the club rules regarding lightning and safety when you are on the course or practice facility.

Sawgrass Country Club West Nine Bunker Project
June 4th-August 14th
Project Scope of Work

A portion of the Phase III master facilities plan approved by membership included the updating of the West Nine greenside bunkers. The following is a brief snap-shot of this project.

The bunkers on the West Nine were last renovated in the summer of 2013. At that time, the newest bunker technology available was the Better Billy Bunker System. Under the direction of the golf course architect, Sawgrass was one of the first clubs in the State to utilize this new construction method. As is the case when adopting new technologies, there are always “bugs” to work out.

Following the completion of the West Nine bunkers, and while building the East and South bunkers (2014-2015), the Better Billy Bunker people reached out to Sawgrass. They explained that the original specifications that called for 3”- 4” of bunker sand at the bottoms were receiving less than optimum feedback from the golfing community. The bunkers seemed to be too firm and too wet for the Florida climate. The new recommendation was to install 7” of angled sand to the bottom of the bunker. After consulting with the USGA, GCSAA, GCBAA, and our golf course architect, it became clear that the newest specifications provided a more desirable golfing experience. As a result, the East and South Nine bunkers were built with 7” on the bottom while the West Nine were built with 3”.

The scope of work this summer is to remove the bunker sand from the greenside bunkers on the West Nine and excavate them to the matching depth of the East Course. The faces will be stabilized with a capillary concrete while the drainage at the base will be replaced. This provides for a better draining bunker and a more consistent playing surfaces property wide.

Work begins during the normal maintenance closure period which starts on June 4th. The West Nine is scheduled to remain closed for the summer, reopening following the August maintenance closure.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but assure you that the professional staff and management team of Sawgrass Country Club have met with many industry professionals and all agree this is our most appropriate course of action.

Thank you again for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you on the property.

How many golf courses have a
Par 3, about 5 Iron distance,
with water on the right?

They know that an Iron over 38“
long and less than 28° of loft
has a good chance of going right.

Ten years ago, we told you that your
4 Iron loft had strengthened to become
the same loft as the previous year’s 3 Iron.
Your 5 Iron will today have the same
loft as that 3 Iron.
Without question, most golfers ought to be
replacing their 5 Iron with a Hybrid.
They should be investing in improving
their technique. And smiling as they walk
up to their ball on the green. It makes it easier
to enjoy the geese! It also means you’re
buying less golf balls.

Bring your problem distance to us. Let us spend time whether improving your technique with an existing club,
or filling the gap with a better solution. Come and spend 45 minutes with us,
and let’s see how best to fill that gap.

We want more golfers to have a great experience out on the golf course.

To do that, you don’t have to take on the same challenge as
Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen, Shangsan Feng or Lexi Thompson.
In fact, you already don’t play the same length golf course they do.

So, let’s play more formats that make it more enjoyable for more golfers.

PGA Junior League is a format that combines a competitive element with a game that stays ‘in play’ longer
(2v2 over 3x3 holes), with the playability benefits of a Scramble format.

There are 3 ‘flags’ to be won. If you’re playing 18, why not play 2v2 better ball scramble, over 3x6 holes?

And actually, why not find time to
play nine in this format (3x3 holes),
 before or after your day?

Or nine on a Sunday afternoon
with the family?

You can still have friendly competition, but it’s likely that this is a much more social format:
you come together on the tee; for the 2nd shot; and on the green. That’s more fun together.

Try it. Try and think of different ways to play the game, to allow the less skilled the opportunity to
get much more enjoyment from the experience. Or for you to change it up and enjoy yourself more.

And if you need help finding more fairways on your own, then
