Hello golfers!

What an unbelievable weekend of sport and in particular, what an amazing weekend for South African sport.

We had two huge wins on tour with Justin Harding, playing on a sponsors invite and in his first event on the Asian Tour, winning the Indonesian Open. This gives Justin full status on the Asian Tour and marks Justin’s 3rd win of the year with 2 wins coming earlier this season on the Sunshine Tour. Justin has now moved from outside the top 700 in the world to 124th in the space of 7 months, a truly remarkable achievement.

Brandon Stone fired a scintillating 60 (10 under par) during the final round of the Scottish Open to completely blow the entire field away and claim a 3rd European Tour win. Brandon, who has struggled with his game over the past 12 to 18 months, seemed to find something over the last 3 days and claimed the biggest win of his career that will also see him peg it up at Carnoustie at next weeks Open Championship.

This weekend also saw the final chapter close on the Russia 2018 where France overcame a tenacious Croatian team to claim their second World Cup, 20 years after their first. The final was a filled with thrills, goals and incredible excitement (something we’re not used to seeing at a World Cup final) and ultimately the best team of the tournament came out on top with France winning 4-2. Russia 2018 has been hailed as one of the greatest, filled with lots of amazing goals, the first ever use of VAR (which still needs some tweaking but for the most part added some much needed consistency to the refereeing during the tournament) and an incredibly well run tournament that kept us glued to our screens all the way through.

And lastly, he may not have come out as the eventual champion but for many of us that watched him play and listened to him speak, Kevin Anderson flew the flag highest of all with his humility and gra-ciousness during one of the most incredible weekends in Wimbledon history.

Novak Djokovic was sublime in a one sided final that gave him his 4th Wimbledon title, but the manner in which Anderson handled the loss on Sunday along with his humility in getting to the final (the first SA player to do so in 33 years) that really made him stand out as sports star that all of us can be proud to call our own. Sometimes we forget that the youth are watching, learning and copying every move these big stars make and I hope that many of them got a chance to watch and listen to Anderson who showed the world that there’s more to the game than just winning.

The Open Championship

The Open Championship gets underway on Thursday and from all the pictures doing the rounds on social media, Carnoustie is going to play firm, hard and fast. If the winds stay down, we can expect scoring to be lower than usual even on a layout like Carnoustie, but if the winds get up and start gusting like they’re prone to do on the coastline of Scotland, then we could be in for some interesting golf on one of the games most difficult tracks. We have a massive SA contingent at this year’s championship but I guess you all know who I’ll be rooting for this week. To me, The Open Championship is the biggest tournament in our sport that never disappoints and tests every facet of a players game. The winner needs to have it both technically and mentally, especially if Carnoustie bares it’s teeth.
