All members of the golf club are invited to attend the 2nd Member’s Forum on Thursday 16th August, starting at 6pm.
The purpose of the meeting is primarily to introduce the Slope System, which becomes effective from 3rd September. Rita Herholdt will be presenting on behalf of Golf RSA and members are encouraged to attend and ask any questions relating to the new handicap system and course rating.
We will also use the opportunity to discuss some of our current golf course maintenance practices and special projects, as well as give some feedback on the last financial year.
Please RSVP by latest 12 noon on Thursday 16th. Winter has come late this year with temperatures in the low to mid-twenties for the most of July. We welcome the cooler weather and rain that August has provided so far.
The course in general is not growing actively now with morning soil temperatures of under 13c. The off-colour on our fairways and tees are proof that the soil temperatures are too cold for the paspalum grass we have covering most of our tees and fairways. The slow to no growth makes it vitally important to please fill divot and repair pitch-marks. Fortunately, all seeded areas on the course have germinated better than expected.
We will continue replacing areas on greens that has died off due to high sodium levels. We are combating the problem chemically and we are seeing small improvements with the daily salinity readings. We hope to get good rain the next month or two, that will help leach the harmful salts and improve the soil profile. We have a seen a decrease in Sodium levels on the greens, with POGO results showing a positive reduction count of between 10-15%.
We are currently busy with the following projects:
• 4th hole – extending the area of rough behind the green. Work has started to clear the ESA behind the green to allow for a greater run-off area behind and to the right of the green. This area will be treated as GUR until full recovery.
• 7th green – replacing affected parts of the green with fresh, uncontaminated grass sods. Sodding this area will not completely solve the problem but will restore the putting surface with the pending season only a matter of weeks away. A long-term decision on some of the most problematic greens will have to be made over the coming months, with possible re-construction necessary.
• 14th hole - the bush near the green on the right has been cleared which has opened up the hole and given it a fresh look. All prep work should be completed by this week so that the area can be re-seeded. This area will be treated as GUR until full recovery.
• Continually removing Kikuyu from teeing areas .
