PGA Professionals are the potential ‘leaders of our industry’. That offers them so much potential, but they need to embrace a role with responsibility, and the development of a skill set that promises greatness.

As a minimum, a golfer coming to you for a fitting and the purchase of a new set of irons ought to expect the following journey with you:

You end the fitting with a clear understanding of why the golfer is buying the irons.

When the irons are ready, as part of the handover, you go to the range and check the golfer is getting the result they expect.

After 30 days, you take the irons back and complete a club check looking for faults.

After 90 days, you book the golfer in for a swing check. Are they achieving their goals, are they happy? Is there anything more you can do?

After 365 days, the irons come back, and you re-grip them on a special to make them as good as new. You review the golfer’s performance. Are they achieving their goals?

Review with the golfer the next improvement they can make. What’s the next step on their journey?

At every step of the way, as the expert-guide, and armed with the knowledge of the goal the golfer is chasing, you can make additional recommendations for what the golfer should be doing. What practice. What swing improvement. You are the expert. You are the guide.

No online, or superstore or high street retailer can compete with this.
Remember, as the expert-guide, you’re committed to the destination the golfer wants to reach. Everyone else is only committed to the sale.

And this was only the minimum. Is it worth your investment? Will they stay as a member or golfer at your club? Will they be loyal to you? Will they invest in coaching if you think that’s what’s required? Will they upgrade their metalwoods with you?

A better future can be created
I asked you: “what are the skills required to be a good golf coach?” I wanted you to compare your list with the list from the many workshops I’ve run this year. Here’s the list from the workshops. I’ve combined some to come to this list:
Good listener
Good communicator
Adaptable
Flexible
Knowledgeable about the swing and teaching
Patient
Good motivator (inspiring)

Can you see skills missing from this list?
