Dear Member,

Weekday Club Championships

The Weekday Club Champs was played on the 1st and 2nd of July. Once again it was a very successful tournament. At a stage, we had over 80 entries, but unfortunately with the current third wave we are experiencing, the numbers reduced to 74, which is still a great turnout considering we had just over 60 in last year’s event. The event was very well supported by our ladies and we had a total of 19 ladies in the field. The players were greeted at the reception area by our friendly staff members, had a quick drink and snack before the round got underway. The decision was made to play the Championship in the afternoon as we are in the middle of winter. The first day was played on Bushwillow, and as we noticed over the last couple of months, is playing about 2 strokes tougher than Firethorn at the moment. It was a perfect day for golf and the members managed to get past the first day without any problems. The overnight lead, in the Nett Division, was shared by Sheldene Geddes and Stephanus Greeff on 70 nett, they were closely followed by Peter Roodt on 71. In the Stableford Division, Nick Wessels opened his Weekday Club Champs account with a great 41 points. On 37 points, William Lemont was in the second position and two other players finished day 1 with 36 points. In the Ladies Section, Sheldene was the day 1 leader on 37 points, four ladies ended day 1 on 35 points.

Day 2 was yet again perfect for golf, there was a little bit of a breeze late in the afternoon, but nothing our members couldn’t handle. Playing on our Championship course Firethorn, we were expecting some low scores to be handed in. The course does give the player the opportunity to score on a lot of holes, but find yourself in the wrong area it can quickly become a very difficult course. In the Ladies Section, Alana Bakos finished very strong and followed up her opening round of 35 points with a great 41 on Firethorn. As per the rules of the tournament – one player, one prize, Alana could not win the prize for the Ladies Section, but was rewarded with the runner-up position in the Championship. Sheldene Geddes also placed in the main prizes and could not be eligible for a prize in the Ladies Section. Well done to all our ladies and thank you once again for your support in the event.

As we saw in the Main Club Championships in May, a lot can happen in 18 holes and a winner is never determined after the first round. Koos Loots, age 77, who opened with a level net par 36 points on Bushwillow in his first round, finished with a great closing round of 42 points (80 gross – nearly the same as his age) and secured a five point win over Dion Nair who finished on 73 points for the two rounds. Well done Koos and to all the Stableford winners.

In the Nett Division, Alana Bakos came very close and finished with the best nett score for the Championship with a great 67 nett on day two. Unfortunately, it was not enough and she could only secure the runner-up position with a total of 141. The honours went to Stephanus Greeff; he followed up his opening 70 nett with a very solid 69 on Firethorn to finish on a total of 139 nett and was crowned the 2021 Weekday Club Champion. Well done Steff, and well done to all our winners.
