Influencing the industry to appreciate the power of engagement

Kevin Bridges is a stand-up comedian from Glasgow. He can be very cutting in how he sees the world. One of his observations (edited) is:

“Younger people today have never had to face the devastating fear of rejection at 3 feet”.

He observes that today, the proposition required to acquire a “date”, is all managed in a remote digital environment. The right-swipe and the double-tap have replaced a subtle wink and coy smile.

The act then explores the hilarity of his humiliating experiences of
rejection. But his observation of the “protection” afforded by algorithms and remote screens, and the change in behavior that solicits, is an insightful point.

In your shop have you heard a younger Professional or assistant say that they’ve “talked to” a golfer or member, and wondered what they actually mean by “talked” to? Was it a text, a WhatsApp, or Facebook message? Or did they actually have a verbal conversation?

Bridges is right. Making a proposition to someone’s face is a difficult experience. One that maybe people have less practice with today.
