Lowering Your Score Recently I spent some time fitting a gentlemen, Larry A, for a new driver and a fairway wood. The fitting was a great success and the new woods are making his game a little better. At the conclusion of the fitting he asked me is there was anything else that he needed to add to his bag. After evaluating the remainder of his equipment, I told him that he needed a good sand wedge. He told me to get him one and I got him a new Vokey. For those not familiar with Vokey Wedges, they are the most popular wedges on the market today designed by Bob Vokey.
| After a couple of rounds, I asked him how he was enjoying his new equipment. He told me that he was driving it much straighter and longer and his fairway wood shots were much better, but the club he like the best was his new Vokey. He explained to me that although the woods were making life a little easier, the new sand wedge was helping him to lower his score. He scheduled a lesson and we spent an hour with his wedge hitting a variety of shots around the green and in the bunker. He now better understands how he should be using the wedge under different conditions and I suspect that his scores will continue to improve. |
I gave him a simple test to do the next time he plays and I think it is one that every golfer should do to evaluate their own short game. It is simple, but is really revealing. The next time you play, keep two scores. The first is your actual score and the second one is the standard to compare it to. On every hole when your ball gets inside of 100 yards, add 3 strokes (1 1/2 strokes if your handicap is under 13) to whatever you lie. For instance, you hit your shot on a par three 2 yards short of the green, you would be lying 1 and you would add 3 for a score of 4.
If you do this for 18 holes, I am willing to bet that the majority of you would have a actual score that is higher then the "standard". If that is the case, then you need to get to work. You see, while a new drive may make you life a little easier and the game a little more fun, simple improvement to your short game can make an immediate impact on your scores.
