Spring Four Ball Qualifying Round
In the Spring Four Ball qualifying round, 26 teams played for one of the 16 match play spots. Two teams tied for low round of the day. Peter Brown and Dick Volpicelli were alone atop the leader board for most of the day after posting a sparkling 64. That is, until Scott Carroll and Steve Corr, playing in the next to last group, matched that number. Three teams tied for 3rd one shot back. Dave & Mike Rubin, TJ Lombardini & Steve Jepsen, and newcomers Ed Cohen & Jim Barr all finished at 65.

For the 16th and last available spot, we had quite a logjam. 7 teams shot 68 and only 6 would make it into match play. It seemed that a huge playoff was inevitable. Unfortunately one team was not present for the playoff so the other six teams made it to match play without the stress of extra holes. Click here for complete qualifying results.

Several first round matches were played during the week. 2012 champions Dave Riley & Steve Potter got by last year’s consolation flight winners Rich Picceri & John Flanagan 4 & 3. Dave & Mike Rubin edged the team of Andrew Busa and Lee Smith 4 & 2. And in a very tight match, Scott Carroll & Steve Corr lost on the 19th hole to Tom Busa and Tim Murphy. On the first extra hole, Tom fired his second shot close to the hole for a birdie 3 and the win. The first round matches finish up this weekend with the winners advancing to the quarter-finals and the 1st round losers moving to the consolation flight.

On The Course
This week the fairways were topdressed with sand. Topdressing is a USGA recommended practice and serves several purposes. The sand spread over turf grass improves the surface, adding to the nutrient-supplying ability of the soil, helps with leveling and smoothing, aids in controlling thatch, and helps with the biological balance of the soil. As an added benefit, there is some evidence that over time as sand levels build in the soil worm activity may decrease.
