I have been seeing and reading a lot about slow play lately. It seems that the USGA, the PGA , and the PGA Tour are all trying to address the growing problem. From lengthy pre-shot routines, to marking balls on the green for short putts, to just plain not being ready to play when it is your turn, the discussion is all about how to improve the time it takes to navigate the golf course. Here at LGC we have been working on improving the pace of play for several years, but as Tiger likes to say, “It’s a process!”

H
ere are a few easy common sense timesaver hints:
1) Forget about honors except in major competitions. Parts of golf etiquette deal with the order of play. Under U.S.G.A. rules, the order of play is determined by lot on the first tee, and by score of the previous hole on every hole thereafter. During a hole, the player farthest from the flag has the “honor” of playing next. Observance of the honor came about as a show of politeness to ones partners, but the slow play problem requires that honors be abandoned out of politeness to the other golfers on the course. Each player should play when ready, as long as doing so will not interfere with others or their safety.
2) On the Tee: The first player ready to hit should do so. Shorter hitters can often hit first.
3) On the Green: Leave your bag, or if in a cart, park your cart in line with the next tee. Line up your putt before it is your turn. And probably the biggest time saver of them all, follow continuous putting rules until holed out, unless restricted by another’s line.

A few other thoughts on slow play. Long pre-shot routines drive your playing partners nuts. Most of them will be too kind to say anything, but be sure of this, they will not be seeking you out for their next game. Next time out, try this challenge. Play the entire round without that lengthy pre-shot routine, multiple practice swings, waggles, windups etc. etc. I am willing to bet your score will not be worse than normal, and in most cases, I bet you will find that your score actually improves. Try it and see for yourself!

And PLEASE, there are no lunch balls, breakfast balls, mulligans, call them what you like, at LGC. In fact, I have seen some pretty close calls where someone decided to hit an extra shot off the first tee when other players on the course did not expect it. So for pace of play and safety, one ball and one ball only off the first tee.

LGC golfers on Tour
Kudos to LGC Junior Member Jeff Lang. Jeff recently completed the rare feat of qualifying for both the Massachusetts Open and the Massachusetts Amateur in the same year. The Mass Open gets underway on Monday at Woodland CC in Newton. The Mass Amateur is being played at Longmeadow CC in western Mass. in early July. In a postponed qualifier at Winchester CC, we also have two other junior players who will be trying to join Jeff at Longmeadow. On Monday, Connor McGuirk will be teeing off at 8 am and Brian Delgreco has a 9:48 tee time as they vie for one of the 12 spots that will move on to the Championship Proper from the Winchester qualifying site. You can follow all the scoring at the MGA website, mgalinks.org, as they represent LGC in some of the most prestigious tournaments in the state.

Dan Brennan and Steve Keegan win the 2013 Spring FourBall
In a see-saw match, Dan and Steve jumped out to a quick lead with birdies on 2 of the first 3 holes. Jack Finlayson and Tom Harvey battled back to even the match when Tom birdied the 7th hole. Dan and Steve edged ahead for good winning holes 8, 11, and 12 building a 3 up lead and held on for the final winning margin of 3 & 2. For Jack and Tom, it was a bit of deja-vu finishing runner-up for the 2nd straight year.

In the Consolation Flight, the final match is set. 2006 Champions TJ Lombardini and Steve Jepsen will square off against Steve Corr and Scott Carroll. In a delayed semi-final match, Steve and Scott routed Rich Laurendeau and Paul Carroll 7 & 6 to advance to the final match.

June 8th & 9th - Men’s Senior Championship
36 holes of Net medal play in 2 divisions. 55-64 yrs and 65+ years. We also recognize a super senior champion who is over 75 years. New for this year we will be crowning the player who turns in the 36 hole low gross score as the LGC Senior Club Champion. We have never had a championship to identify our best Senior player, so adding this to the ranks of LGC Club Champions (Men’s, Women’s, and Junior) is long overdue.

June 21st & 22nd - Men’s 2-Day Member-Guest
Invitations have been mailed and are available in the pro shop. Field is limited to the first 30 completed applications that are returned to the pro shop. As of today, there is only 1 opening remaining. June 26th – 1-Day Member-Guest
NEW FOR THIS YEAR!
What is so new about a 1-Day Member-Guest? How about a 1-Day Member-Guest on a Wednesday! For several years now, the golf committee has been hearing from members who would love the opportunity to bring some guests to a 1-Day Member-Guest, but can’t because they travel out of town on Friday for the weekend. “Can’t we have one during the week?” they ask. Well your golf committee has heard you, and for the very first time at LGC, we have scheduled a Member-Guest tournament on a Wednesday! Open to all members. Bring 1,2, or 3 guests. Entry fee includes prizes, range balls and dinner. Shotgun start at 1 pm. Sign up in Pro shop. Field is limited to the first 60 players to sign up.
