Tournament Results
The Senior Championship was played last weekend. In the Senior Club Championship (gross division), Peter Scully came out on top firing rounds of 74-78 for a 152 total. That was good for a 6 stroke victory over runner-up Paul Caruso (77-81=158). Coming in third, another 2 strokes back, we had Steve Jepsen (80-80=160).

In the net division, Bob Nardella was the winner in the 55-64 yr age group. With 2 great rounds, a 66 in round 1, followed by an equally impressive 67 in round 2, Bob’s 133 total gave him a 5 stroke margin of victory over Mike Amico (69-69=138). Peter Chamberlain (69-71=140) and Steve Jepsen (71-71=142) rounded out the top finishers.

In the 65+ yr age group Bob Wik cruised to a 4 stroke win over Steve Potter with rounds of 64-69=133. Steve was the first round leader after a sparkling 63 (low round of the day!) but could not keep up the pace on day 2 shooting a 74 for a 137 total. However that was good enough to hold on to the runner-up position, edging out third place finisher Paul Caruso (67-71-138). Senior Club Champion Peter Scully rounded out the top finishers with net scores of 68-72=140.

In the Super-Senior division (75+ yrs) Paul Caruso, with his score of 138 came out on top.

Congratulations to all the winners!

U.S. Open
This week sees the second Major of the year, the U.S. Open, being played at the historic Merion course after a break of 32 years. Home to the most U.S.G.A. Championships in history (Merion), the Open was last contested there in 1981. The course is under 7,000 yards, unusual for a Major these days. But from all reports, the course will be no push over. Do not expect any 20 under par winning totals here. I'm sure that the USGA will have the course set up so that won’t happen.

This event has thrown up some surprise winners in the past. If you are making any bets in your office pool, keep in mind, until recently, Europeans have not had a great record in the US Open. Only McIlroy and McDowell have won since Tony Jacklin in 1970. That was a stat I found hard to believe . . . no Seve, no Faldo!

Wherever the eventual Champion comes from, the winning recipe has 3 key ingredients:

1) Great ball striking. Hitting fairways and greens is paramount.
2) Making putts inside of 10'. You are going to miss greens on an Open course. You need to make the par saving putts and capitalize on your birdie opportunities.
3) Patience! Everyone is going to have some bad holes. Minimize the damage and accept that par, sometimes even bogey is a good score.

LGC golfers on Tour
LGC Junior Member Jeff Lang played in the Massachusetts Open earlier this week at Woodland CC. With rounds of 80-79=159 Jeff missed the cut for the final round. Checking Jeff’s scorecard at the MGA website, mgalinks.org, it looks like it was the back 9 both days that gave him trouble. Even still, qualifying for and playing in the State Open Championship is quite an achievement. Great job Jeff!

Last Monday we had Connor McGuirk and Brian DelGreco playing in a state Amateur qualifier at Winchester CC. Unfortunately neither had their best round and missed the cut which fell at 77. Though Brian (83) and Connor (85) failed to make the cut, I am certain both gained valuable tournament experience and will be back again next year.

June 26th – 1-Day Member-Guest
NEW FOR THIS YEAR!
What is so new about a 1-Day Member-Guest? How about a 1-Day Member-Guest on a Wednesday! For several years now, the golf committee has been hearing from members who would love the opportunity to bring some guests to a 1-Day Member-Guest, but can’t because they travel out of town on Friday for the weekend. “Can’t we have one during the week?” they ask. Well your golf committee has heard you, and for the very first time at LGC, we have scheduled a Member-Guest tournament on a Wednesday! Open to all members. Bring 1,2, or 3 guests. Entry fee includes prizes, range balls and dinner. Shotgun start at 1 pm. Sign up in Pro shop. Field is limited to the first 60 players to sign up.
