British Open Week
The British Open is probably my favorite major to watch on television. Who will win the Claret Jug this week? In this era of post Tiger dominance, it could be almost anyone. Eleven of the last thirteen majors have been won by first time winners. Fourteen of the last seventeen have been rookie winners. The possibilities are endless, but links golf is so different than what we play here in the US. Success on the PGA Tour does not always translate to success in the British Open. Just ask Phil Mickelson. His 41 tour wins places him 9th on the all time career list. His 6 runner-up finishes in the U.S. Open including one just a few weeks ago at Merion, are also well documented. His record in the British, however, only include a pair of top-10s in 19 career starts. By far his worst record of any major. In 2002, the last time the Open was played at Muirfield, he finished a distant 66th. My money is on a European, and a first timer, but that is only a wild guess. The fact is, no one knows for sure, which is why we will all be watching . . . for sure!

Memorial Scholarship Pro-Am
This year’s Memorial Scholarship Pro-Am was one for the record books. First of all, participation was way up over previous years. We had 60 golfers tee it up for “the cause”. A 65% increase in participation! Secondly, thanks to the extremely generous donations received from members, the donation totals were the highest on record. All told, we raised over $ 4,700 for the club’s scholarship fund, more than double last year’s total, and yes, another record! I wish to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in or donated to this years fund raising effort. Each year the club awards scholarships to a Lexington High School golf team member and to qualifying employees of the club. Click here to view more photos from the event.

Everyone had a great day of golf. Once again, the Bramble format proved to be very popular with the players. In a bramble, the team selects the best drive (like a scramble) but then all players play their own ball in to the hole. The team of John Taves, Steve Geldart (one of several scholarship recipients who teed it up), Lee Smith, and Garrett Johnson found the format particularly to their liking, winning with an amazing score of 111 (-31). Four teams tied for 2nd place. The team of Mike Champagne, Matt Champagne, Dianne Champagne, Jim Magliozzi, and the team of Steve Keegan, Dan Brennan, Mike Keegan fired 115 (-27) in the morning wave of play. The teams of Steve Corr, Kris Corr, Terry Deleo, Becky Merchant, and Rich Laurendeau, Shawn Seitz, Matt Crowley, and Dan Hirsch matched that score in the afternoon wave. Using the bramble format going forward, hopefully we can continue to build this tournament into one of the most popular events on the schedule!
