Masters Recap
The saying goes that the Masters doesn’t begin until the back 9 on Sunday. Few things in golf are as certain as the sports drama that is delivered every year on the Sunday back 9 at Augusta. We have gotten spoiled over the years. Phil’s incredible 6 iron from the pine straw on hole #13 sparking a back 9 score of 32 to win in 2010. Charl Schwartzel’s 4 birdie finish to win in 2011. Bubba’s memorable hooking gap wedge out of the trees on the 2nd playoff hole in 2012. Angel Cabrera’s birdie on 18 to force a playoff with Adam Scott last year and the incredibly high level of golf and sportmanship displayed in the playoff.

This years Masters lacked all that. The Sunday back 9 became . . . well, a bit of a snooze fest. Nobody made a run at the leaders. Birdies on the back 9 seemed nonexistent. Name players and former major champions were awol.

Don’t get me wrong. Bubba Watson is a worthy champion and played the best golf over the 4 days. But I for one missed the usual back 9 drama that has come to be synonymous with Masters Sunday. This year, the Masters did not begin on the back 9 on Sunday.

On the Course
Mother Nature is playing some games with us. After several warmer days last weekend, this week we were treated to another cold blast. Morning temperatures were in the 20’s and on Wednesday we even had snow cover (see pics). Although the snow melted when the sun hit it, the temps did not rise above the low 40’s with wind chills much lower.

The course has been greening, but we need higher temps to get the grass growing and the course healing from the harsh winter.

1st green on Wednesday AM.

9th green. And you guys in Florida complain about the grain!

Mark your calendar!
Wednesday, May 7th, we have scheduled an MGA Rules Night. It will begin at 7:00 pm and give you a chance to brush up on the rules and perhaps answer any rules questions you might have.

     Check Your Grips
This is the perfect time to check the condition of your grips. The dry winter months has undoubtedly taken its toll on them. Whether stored in the house, garage, or even worse yet, your car trunk, most grips are ready for replacement after the winter. I see many golfers who try to get some extended play with old worn out grips. Sometimes grip wear is hard to detect because it can be so gradual. The fact is, once the grips have worn out, more grip pressure is required to keep the club from slipping in your hands. This added grip pressure increases tension in the swing and does not allow for the proper release (rotation) of the hands and clubhead. Grip replacement . . . it might just be the first step in curing that dreaded slice!

There are some awesome new grips available this year. So bring your clubs by the shop sometime for a FREE grip evaluation. If new grips are in order, we can get them installed in 1 day.

NEW TECHNOLOGY GIVES YOU A FORGED IRON WITH ALL-ROUND PERFORMANCE
Previous logic was that forged Irons must have a smaller sweet spot and were the preserve of the better and best players. The leading manufacturers have, however, found ways, using multi-material engineering, to deliver a forged Iron with its superior feel in a club that offers a larger hitting area and more forgiveness. The emphasis of PING’s philosophy has been, and remains, that whatever the construction, getting the perfect fit for your swing should be the number 1 priority. The PING Anser is an Iron that, as well as offering the regular golfer the chance to get fit perfectly, offers the regular golfer the chance to have forged feel and PING playability.

The secret to the pioneering design is the multi-material manufacture with a face and body forged separately and then welded. That allows the face to flex, creating both a larger hitting zone and greater ball speeds.

Stabilizing bars are then the secret to managing the correct launch and appropriate forgiveness through the set. Watch the video to hear Marty Jertson, the head of PING’s design team, explain how that works for you.

Whatever your requirements, consistency of ball striking, and opportunity for improvement, there is a PING Iron that will fit your game. Added to the level of fitting that PING supports, these technology options mean that we can create the perfect setup for you.

We may have space age materials and manufacturing changing the way a club head is designed, but what hasn’t changed is the need to find out where you strike the face with the ball.

Armed with that information we can match it to the latest design features which will offer you the quickest and easiest improvement. Your route to better ball striking starts with a review of your swing and your desire to get a better result.
