We hollowtined the course yesterday...and yes, it's already ready for play!
The hollowtining of greens, tees and sometimes even the fairways, is an essential part of every golf course’s maintenance programme and yet many people still don’t understand why it is done and why this process interrupts their golf annually.

What is hollowtining?
It is quite literally the removal of little cores of turf from the playing surface. These can vary in size and depth depending on the reason for hollowtyning. These are removed and the surface is then brushed with soil, which fills the holes that are left behind.

Why do we hollowtine?

Basically because general traffic – feet, mowers etc cause the ground to become compacted and hard over time, which affects the efficiency of the drainage, which in turn affects the amount of oxygen that the grass roots are able to absorb. Hollowtining allows the turf to expand and air and moisture to be absorbed.

This not only prevents the spread of disease but coring also reduces thatch build up and by top dressing we are able to replace poor soil with good soil. If necessary we can also overseed at the same time to improve the playing surface.

Bryanston Country Club’s 70th Birthday…
Zwartkop is going to enter two teams – one ladies and one men’s into the Bryanston 70th Birthday Golf Day taking place on Wed, 30th May. We will be doing a lucky draw for two members to be part of each team.

The draw will be done from all the members that have played at Zwartkop between 27th April and 20th May. All costs for the day will be paid by Zwartkop.

No Show Rounds…
Sorry to add a gripe into the newsletter but we are having a big issue at the moment with no shows over the weekends. Out of respect for the Club and your fellow members, we ask you to give us 48-hours notice if you are going to cancel your booked game. That allows us enough time to offer the tee-time to someone who is on the waiting list, and it also means the Club doesn’t lose out on revenue.

In future, no shows will be fined R50 per person – remember that if you book for a four-ball, you are responsible for ensuring that four people arrive to play.

Spoil Mom this Sunday at our Mothers Day Lunch…
It’s Mothers Day this Sunday, 13th May and we are putting on a scrumptious lunch with live music, which will be the perfect way for her to unwind.

We’ll have a plated starter, buffet mains and dessert table for just R200 per person. Kids under-5 free & kids under-12 half price. Bookings essential so give Ina a call on (012) 654-1144 / admin@zwartkopcatering.co.za

Boss of the Bar – Thurs, 17th May
The ladies from the Zwartkop Hair & Beauty Salon are taking on the role of Barman next Thursday. Join them for a fun, Mexican themed evening – we’ll have drinks, snacks – including nachos and some live music! Click here for a teaser!

If you’re a moderate swing speed golfer, you still want a golf ball to offer
you performance everywhere, with no compromises.

The Srixon AD333 Tour is specifically designed
to give you distance off the tee, stable ball flight in windy conditions, stopping power on approach shots,
check and control around the green, and all
with the feel the best golfers demand.

This is a premium performance golf ball without the premium price. If you’re a regular golfer,
playing probably a 2-pce golf ball, then trial a sleeve of the Srixon AD333 Tour.
Check the all-round performance, but especially note the greenside spin.

We’re trying to help you make more 3’s on the Par 3’s.
Better decision-making is going to improve your scores.

Despite the increased amount of GPS data available, regular and inexperienced golfers still,
on the majority of occasions, come up short.

Even when a golfer knows the “yardage” on each of their clubs,
their misses are mostly short.

Simple Tip #2
Why are you expecting the perfect golf shot? What is your level of consistency?

 If there’s no trouble behind
the green, then ignore the
distance to the flag, and pick a
club that, when struck well,
will get you to the back of
the green. That way a less
than perfect ball strike has
a chance of getting to
the green. Rarely do even
good ball strikers
make perfect contact.

Where are the majority of your misses on all approach shots?
Would aiming for the back of the green (assuming no trouble behind the hole)
be a course management strategy that would improve your whole round?
Improving your performance on Par 3’s will probably increase your enjoyment
throughout the round. Think about improvement. If we can help,
