I’m delighted to say the spell of good weather has continued and this is reflected in the scoring!

Thursday Medal Sweep – John Adams, nett 66

On Saturday, The HLI Cleek was played for as a Bogey Competition and was won by Andy Romer with a score of 5 Up.

This very attractive, if unusual, trophy was presented by the golfers of the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry in 1891, who camped upon the area of the golf course near the 14th fairway “on account of the pleasure they had received on the course”- presumably having been given the courtesy of playing at the club. John Haddow won it three times in 1891, 1903 and 1907 and according to custom won it outright. His widow however represented it to the club in 1925.

The Saturday Sweep Winners were:
1srt Class - Iain Steele, Paul McCafferty and William McRuvie on 2 Up
2nd Class – Mark Easton on 4 Up
3rd Class – Andy Romer on 5 Up

Sunday Sweep Winners:

1st Class - Adam Collin nett 65
2nd Class - Ian Adam nett 67
3rd Class - David Park nett 67

The combination of some rain and sun has brought the course on a lot in the last week or so and it really is looking great. It’s worth mentioning that there were 59 2's scored over the 3 days, so the greens must be running well too!

This Saturday, we will be running the May Medal Glove Promotion.

Buy any FootJoy glove before you tee off in Saturday's medal and if you get your handicap cut, you will receive another one free! You can never go wrong with a nice new glove, so why not give it a try!

A mid-Iron second, over a nasty hazard, with more trouble right of the green,
tests your technique, your equipment, your fitting, and your confidence.

A Hybrid has the forgiveness,
and deeper centre of gravity this shot needs.
But some golfers struggle mentally with the
need to strike the ball a descending blow
with a Hybrid.
That’s why some manufacturers have
created Crossovers or Hybrid-Irons.
Mentally it is easier to think about,
and execute, a slightly descending
blow with this club.

If there’s an area of your approach shot game from the Fairway that punishes you too often,
there’s potential for scorecard improvement. Use the right fitted equipment with the right technique,
and you’ll be able to take the challenge on with a greater chance of success.
Spend 45 minutes with us. Let’s make a difference.

When you’re practising short shots, pay close attention to ball flight, carry, roll etc., especially when you change ball position, setup or club. Practice is a great chance to learn about your game. It’s knowledge you take to the course.

If I asked you what distance, the run-out on a 5 yard chip shot would be with your 48° Wedge;
would you know the answer?
How does that change if you play the shot to the same landing, but with a 52° Wedge?
Practise so you develop this knowledge.

Practice is about more than perfecting your technique. It makes you a better golfer

because your understanding of what the golf ball will do should improves.

In the practice session above, you’ve set up tees at 4 yards, 5 yards & 6 yards from your chipping point,
with imaginary lines (between the tees at each distance).Take your 60° Wedge,
and attempt to chip the ball so that it will land between the 4 and 5 yards (watch the roll-out).
Then with the same club, between 5 and 6 yards (watch the roll-out).
Then just past the 6 yards line (watch the roll-out).
Now take your 56° and perform the same challenge (watching the roll-out).
Do this all the way up to your #8 Iron.

Challenge yourself in your practice. And learn at the same time.
Next time you’re on the course, put that knowledge to good use.
If you have a question about this skills challenge,
