Hough’s It

First round leader Daniel Bersiks managed a 2nd round of 38 points to end up on 81, and just enough to hang on against fast-finishing Ryan Bytenski, whose last round 43 pointer just wasn’t enough to catch Dan, and left him 1 point adrift on 80. Dan won a Callaway Rogue driver for his efforts!

Nic Frangos was 3rd on 77, with Doc Josset and Stefan Drue tied on 75, but with Doc getting 4th because of his better final round score. Barry Sher (6th) and Liam Clinton (7th) were the only other 2 members to better their handicaps over the 2 rounds.

Ex-Captain Pam Pokroy had her best round in well over a year with a 39 pointer that left her 5 points clear of Anne Hoffman and Elaine Rubens after the 1st round of the Ladies Sid Brews Trophy.

Here are the complete first round scores, with the 2nd and final round taking place this Saturday.

Updated scores as follows, showing Jeff Goldberg performers Daniel Bersiks and Doc Josset starting to close in on leader Mike Wainbergas, while Pam Pokroy also starts to climb the Ladies list.

Bryson DeChambeau won his 2nd event on the PGA Tour with a playoff victory in Jack’s Memorial event at the picture-perfect Muirfield Village on the weekend.

BDC – a self-confessed golfing scientist - is a breath of fresh air on the Tour, not that I fully agree with his single-length irons, where all his irons and wedges have 7i-length (37.5 inches) shafts in them. He also uses a relatively straight-armed and stiff-wristed swing, which keeps the club on one plane throughout, yet he still gives it a solid smack, and is one of the longest around. He also uses some of the thickest grips available, which then necessitates the club sitting in his palms, not in his fingers!

Now there’s some different stuff for you!!!

He also studies his yardage and green books intimately, and is an avid student of the game, yet in contrast to his modernism, he wears old-style flat caps manufactured by Cobra-Puma – they call them their Tour Driver caps - and which they’ve now made an official line in their latest clothing ranges.

Keep an eye on this young man; it seems like he’s going to be around for a while. Six Top 10 finishes already this season is pretty decent.

On a personal note, I was both quite happy and disappointed to see that former US Open champions Ernie and Jim Furyk got special exemptions from the USGA – the governing body of golf in the US, and the people who run the upcoming US Open – yet they failed to extend the same invite to Retief Goosen, himself a double US Open champ, and who by the way just happens to be the last golfer to win a US Open at Shinnecock Hills (2004), the venue for the 2018 edition just next week.

And don’t expect such low scoring in next week’s Open as they did at Erin Hills last year; it looks like we’re going to see a more traditional US Open set-up again, with thick rough and firm fast fairways, plus firm fast greens, but hopefully the USGA don’t go overboard at Shinnecock like they did in 2004, where expecting lots of rain, they firmed up the greens big time. But the expected rains didn’t materialize, and the rock-hard greens and breezes rendered the course almost unplayable, to the point where they had to water some of the greens in the middle of play in Sunday’s final round.

The Goose’s putting that day on those greens was a Major putting masterclass like no other!

That’s all for this week.

Have a great week.

Kappy.

Think about the Par 3’s you play. What is the distance that you just don’t have covered in your bag?
For most golfers, there will be a point between 170 metres and 210 metres where they just don’t have
the club to hit the target distance.

Some of you may even have a club to get to the green, but find you’re just not able to stop the ball.
Your mis-hit is short; your perfect strike, through the back.

The higher lofted Fairway Wood is a great solution for a regular to slower swing speed golfer. The deeper CoG, and usually lower profile, helps to get the ball higher with a steeper landing trajectory. The ball stops quicker.

Bring your problem distance to us. Let us spend time whether improving your technique with an existing club,
or filling the gap with a better solution. Come and spend 45 minutes with us,
and let’s see how best to fill that gap.

If you’re playing golf, outside of a competition, then it’s your rules that count.

If you’ve got some less experienced golfers in your four-ball, you’ll be surprised how much more they enjoy
the round if you play a “scramble drive”. That’s where everyone tees off, but you all play your second
shot from the position of the best tee shot.

You can still have friendly competition, but it’s likely that this is a much more social format:
you come together on the tee; for the 2nd shot; and on the green. That’s more fun together.

Try it. Try and think of different ways to play the game, to allow the less skilled the opportunity to
get much more enjoyment from the experience.

And if you need help finding more fairways on your own, then
