 From the Founder's Desk

It’s our Founder's Day today, having welcomed our first 7 students on 2 February 2004, 18 years ago. We started off at the Verwey Driving Range near Fourways, offering a 1-year high-performance, holistic golf training programme for aspiring professionals. It was the first of its kind in South Africa, and we still run that programme today. Along the way, we’ve become an education provider at both college and high school level and ventured out into other sports.

We’ve also changed the lives of hundreds of students who are now spread across the world doing their own great work. It’s been an amazing journey, with plenty of ups and downs along the way. The keys to our longevity have been innovation, perseverance, and continually striving to improve. If you have a dream, don’t wait until you have it perfected, just make a start and keep learning along the way.

Meet Ryan Estment: PGA Diploma Graduate 2020 and Elite Academy 2021

“I was keen on a future in the game, as I had always had a passion for golf and improving. I did some research and came across BSI. I got in touch via email and the rest is history. I was part of the Diploma group graduating in 2020 and did a post-grad year concentrating even harder on my playing aspect of the game and turning Pro in December 2020.

BSI and the facilities – It’s a great environment to practise and spend your days working hard at your game and fitness. I was older than most coming into the Diploma, and even at my age (27 in 2018), you learn how to respect yourself and become responsible for all the decisions around you and your game.

I can’t thank the team I had around me enough: my Swing coach, Christopher Wright, Mental and Performance coach, Mark Fairbank (Kopdokter) and Fitness and Conditioning coach, Renée Reinecke (especially through lockdown), as well as the other coaches that were all willing to help if you needed a touch-up and your coach was busy. The team helps you if you need the help, without hesitation (but it is up to you to seek the help you desire).

With the work that I put in, and my team put in around me, I believe I have successfully matured as a person and a golfer, turning professional in December 2020. Swing changes were probably the hardest thing to get through, I came into the Academy as a 10-handicap golfer (and invincible) and by following the processes, I have left (as stated above), as a Professional with the aspiration of playing on tour in the near future.

Friendships and family – this is a massive part of your time at BSI. I have met some amazing people along the way, obviously a lot that you may not keep in contact with after your time at the Academy, but a lot more that have become an essential part of who I am today. There are very few sports or career paths that allow for a lot of socialising whilst working hard at your game and training. The team will always be my team, and I will forever be grateful for the help and guidance the team provided.

If I have to single out one moment I will never forget, it will have to be the 36-hole Matchplay final that I played in last year against fellow Elite Player, Jules Helary. It was a phenomenal day of ups and downs (excuse the pun), being 5 down through 19 holes and managing to make a 45-ft eagle putt on the 36th hole to take the match to a playoff. Unsuccessfully for me, I lost in the play-off hole. It was an extremely mentally draining day and one that taught me a lot about never giving up the fight and playing until the ball drops for the last time in a round of golf.

Thank you very much for a great journey and I look forward to sharing my successes with the team.”
