  From the Founder’s Desk

I was fortunate enough to spend a few days last week in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania working with the R&A on a project to improving the competitiveness of golf across Africa.

We were at the All Africa Challenge Trophy, which is the premier women’s international team event on the continent.

The project involves creating a high-performance squad of players from across the continent, who will receive ongoing player support. We will also be upskilling coaches across Africa to ensure sustainable growth of the game and the development of elite performance players from more nations.

This is an exciting project for BSI to be managing.

Paul Mackenzie (TGSE CPT), Kevin Barker (R&A) and Michael Balderstone

While I was away our players at BSI were enjoying one of the best weeks of the year competing in the BSI Team Challenge. See below for details.

 Performance Tip of the Week
How to avoid ‘cupping’ in the back swing

Our Performance Tip this week is from Chris Wright who demonstrates for us a drill to avoid ‘cupping’ in the back swing which can limit slicing the ball.

   No more slice

If you would like some help to limit how much you slice the ball, or if there's another aspect of your game you would like to improve, a BSI coach can help.

BSI Team Challenge 2022

The BSI Team Challenge is a team matchplay event played between 4 teams of 8 players; PGA Year 1, PGA Year 2, PGA Year 3, and Junior Academy. The format is similar to interprovincial events, with each team playing each other head-to-head over 36-holes in foursome and singles.

The event is always a highlight of the year for the students as it provides all the benefits of a competitive team experience. In every graduate interview we do, they always mention the event as a favourite memory.

Congratulations to Team PGA Year 2 who won the 2022 BSI Team Challenge.

 Heritage Month

This week in our Heritage month series, we highlight two young gentlemen who are in our Junior Academy and are concentrating on their golfing ambitions whilst improving on their English language skills. Please meet Dowoo Kim from South Korea and Max Malcher from Germany.

Dowoo Kim

"I am from South Korea and am 16 years old and I started playing golf at 13 years old. I learned about BSI through my coach in Madagascar, Maverick Faber (BSI PGA Diploma Graduate 2018). My dream is to be a Professional Golfer and to be a professional I need to progress my physical game and my mental game.

The coaches at BSI are very good which has helped improve my golf, my fitness and my mental game. My future goals are to play in the big tournaments (Sunshine Tour, DP & PGA) and be the best in the world.

There is a lot of support at BSI and I have built great friendships with my coaches and my school team-mates.  I’m working hard to try and win the weekly medals and external tournaments I enter here in South Africa. I am happy at BSI."

Dowoo Kim

Max Malcher

Background: I am from Germany and am 16 years old. I joined the Academy in July 2022 which I learnt about from my father’s friend. I came to BSI as I want to get better at golf and to improve my English.

Fact about Germany: Berlin is the capital of Germany.

Fun Fact: Germans like to drink beer and eat sauerkraut and potatoes.

What I miss the most: I miss my family, my dogs and my mom’s food.

My time here in South Africa so far: I feel supported at BSI and have made some good friendships. I like the people in South Africa, they are very friendly and they make you feel very welcome.

Max Malcher

These two teenagers are showing some excellent progress in their short time so far at the Academy and have bright futures ahead of them.

For all shots and all golfers

The new Srixon Z-STAR offers all the spin you need for more controlled greenside shots. But it’s also packing serious speed for more distance off the tee.

Pick a sleeve up in the shop and experience the difference that these balls can make to your game. There are very good reasons we feel so comfortable recommending Z-STAR.
