Jacques will be playing in the pre-qualifier for the SA Open and we wish him all the best. | | Well done to Connor Olfsen and Mogale Baas on their joint win in the BSI Junior Academy Weekly Medal with scores of 75, played at Huddle Park GC on Friday, 11 November 2022. It is the third BSI Medal win for Mogale and he has shown a vast improvement and more consistency in the latter part of this year. Mogale has gone from a 7.2 in January to 0.6 (as of 11/11/2022). This is Connor’s first BSI Medal win and it was only a matter of time before his first top podium placing, as he has been posting some excellent golf scores these past few months. His handicap shows this, as he’s dropped from a 10.8 at the beginning of the year to a 4.8 (as of 11/11/2022). Keep up the great work young men. | Mogale Baas & Connor Olfsen | | External Tournament results | | Central Gauteng Open – Kyalami CC (11 – 13 November 2022) Huge congratulations to Grant Labuschagne who finished tied 2nd in the Central Gauteng Open played at Kyalami CC, with a score of 3-under. (2/6) | by Michelle Steyn, BSI Coach | Do you walk into a pro shop and feel completely overwhelmed by all the technology and different clubs surrounding you? We’ve got you. | Out of all 14 clubs in your bag, irons are the majority and therefore it is important to make sure you’ve got the right clubhead designs that suit your game the best. Cavity-back irons – These types of clubheads have their weight more to the sole and edges of the club which makes these irons much easier to hit. When ball striking is slightly off-centre it allows more “forgiveness” to still produce a decent shot with a good outcome/ result. These clubhead designs are recommended for players with a mid to high handicap that will benefit from a larger sweet spot, which will reduce the loss in distance. Cavity-back irons are not only for the average golfer. Tour players Brooks Koepka and Shane Lowry also play with cavity-back irons to keep their game more consistent! | | Blade irons – These types of irons are really hard to hit and mostly designed for the low handicaps and the best players of the game. Featuring a thin top line and face, the hitting area (sweet-spot) is very compact. With a slightly off-strike, players will not have the forgiveness of the cavity-back irons and will face bigger consequences. Although, with solid ball striking, blade irons have some great advantages, such as allowing players to shape the ball better. Most tour players’ play with blade irons, such as Hideki Matsuyama and many others. More often, we see great players with a combo set of irons in their bags, playing with blade irons from PW – 6i and cavity-back or semi blades with their longer irons 5i-3i. The main reason for a set like this is because the longer the club gets, the more difficult it is to control, therefore having some “forgiveness” and a bigger sweet-spot will improve the player’s game. Dean Burmester uses a combination (Z-Forged 5i-PW blades and cavity backs in the longer irons). Now that you’ve got more insight on which clubhead design will suit your game better and produce better results, go try some different clubs out or visit your nearest PGA custom club-fitter. | | Do you need some help with your irons choice?
