See below the news of Pieter de Wet returning to our Golf Coaching Team. Pieter knows the challenges of the development journey through walking the walk himself, like few have done.

As a student in our Academy back in 2007, he arrived as a 5-handicapper playing right-handed. He was ok, but struggling to get to the next level.

After a few months we played a fun game of Action Cricket, and I watched Pieter dominate as a very natural left-handed batsman.  The next day I proposed we try him as a left-handed golfer.  We did an initial video assessment and he was technically better left-handed the very first time he tried than he was his normal way.  He spoke to his dad that night and got the green light and time (this was crucial, well done Mr de Wet) to commit to changing.

He initially got worse, but committed to the change and within 18 months he got good enough to turn Pro and pursue golf as a career.  Pieter remains the only player I’ve changed over like that in 29 years of coaching.

Here we are together back in 2007 swopping jerseys after the SA vs England Rugby World Cup Final.  Pieter’s cousin Andre Pretorius played in that final.

Warm welcome (back) to Coach Pieter de Wet

We are delighted to welcome PGA Professional Pieter de Wet back to the Academy as a PGA Golf Coach.

Pieter was a student in our Elite Academy in 2007 and 2008, before joining our coaching team to complete his PGA apprenticeship under our founder Michael Balderstone. Pieter remained on the BSI Coaching Team until 2014.

Since then, Pieter has continued to coach at various facilities, focusing specifically on Junior development. Pieter will work with students across all our programs, as well as develop our competitive kid's coaching programs.

With Pieter in place, we now have our full Golf Coaching Team set for a fantastic 2023.

Congratulations to Grant Labuschagne on winning our opening Junior Academy medal of 2023 played on Royal Johannesburg and Kensington GC on Friday 13 January. Grant shot a 2-under par 70 on the newly renovated West Course. We look forward to continuing to see Grant’s name on the leaderboard in the future, but there is a competitive group of high school students wanting their name on the winners list too.

 Not Just Golf

We welcomed our BSI Footballers back to the Academy in Modderfontein last week. It was good to see many of the boys from last year returning, but equally encouraging to see the number of new players with a mix of joy and nerves on their faces, as they have found an environment that encourages their passion for their chosen sport.

Part of their induction, was to do our physical assessment and skills testing, which will be tracked and monitored throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing what the boys are going to do this year as they continue to build on their journey to become great footballers and upstanding gentlemen.

Future Stars Tennis Program

We are excited to launch our Future Stars Program for players aged 10-14. Choose between 1, 2 or 3 squad sessions per week with our Tennis SA certified Pro Coaches. Includes a bonus mental performance session with our sports psychologist. This is an ideal preparation programme for our full-time academy, and players will get the opportunity to join in with some full-time squads. Term 1 starts 16th January. Contact tennis@bsisports.com for a registration form. Limited spaces available.

The new Srixon Soft Feel has a soft yet high-speed core and ultra-low compression. Great feel is a given, but what this combination also does is cause a higher moment of inertia for consistent carry and accuracy. So if feel matters most to you but you don’t want that to compromise your distance and accuracy, then you should try the new Srixon Soft Feel Golf Ball.
