Els for Autism is a huge success!

84 players and 100 for dinner as the day yields R230 000+ for Ernie's kids in SA!

Oh, what a day and night as we celebrated in style at St Francis Links. The golf day, rescheduled from June where the weather forecast forced its cancellation. With golfers and supporters traveling from afar, the decision was taken mid-week with a new date set, for everyone to reschedule. in the end, we added teams with some guys coming all the way from Northern Ireland to play and participate.

Nico v Rensburg joined Rob, Bertie and Roy Picken for a memorable day! I asked, "Raise your hand if you love St Francis Links"

The weather this time, was perfect and the enthusiasm on the course carried over to the evening. Keith Donaldson and new member, Paddy Thompson (Absent Irish) got the function rolling with song and played again after the auction. Nico van Rensburg shared videos of Ernie and the Autism story that now effects 1 in 42 boys worldwide. All who were in attendance were moved by the stories with some giving from their pockets to support the children and families (more that 115 families) in SA. My friends, Rob McCormick and Bertie Warwick from "Norn Iron" joined hometown boy, Roy Picken and came with signed originals of Rory and Darren Clarke that were later sold for R15 000 - nice contribution from the lads.

The winners advance to the finals at Highland Gate. The winners there qualify to play in the SA Open Pro-Am at Glendower. That's worth a drive to Dullstoom! On the night, we auctioned some great memorabilia including a Sergio Garcia piece from the Masters, Rory and Ernie from The SA Open, signed bottles of Ernie's wines, trips to the wine country with accommodation at the new Pearl Vally Hotel and golf at Arabella and Pearl Valley, accommodation at the Pezula Conrad for 4 with golf at Fancourt and Pezula and even a trip to the Highland Gate finals for 2 (Hey, if you can't win the trip, support autism and win it in the auction).

Control your wedges

Most players understand the fundamentals of pitching and chipping. They know to set up in a slightly open stance and to favour the front foot. They know they should accelerate through impact and let the loft on the clubface provide the height and spin they need to stop the ball close.

Why do they still hit bad shots? Because they get caught up in trying to control the distance the ball goes without really knowing how to do it. They decelerate on short shots and swing wildly on the longer shots.

Vary your backswing

It is very difficult to control distance by swinging faster or slower. Rather develop a system of wedge distances by varying how far you take back the club. Let’s say that in Picture 1 Brenden will with his lob wedge hit the ball 40 metres. His left arm angle points towards 8’o clock.

In Picture 2 Brenden’s left arm is parallel to the ground. He knows that when he stops his swing here he hits the ball 55 metres. In Picture 3 his left arm angle is towards 10 o’clock. He is able to hit the ball 75 metres when he stops his swing at this point.

By spending time on the range and practising this system he will be able to better control his wedges. It is very important to control the speed of the swing, to accelerate through the shot and to keep in control of the swing. He will lower his score and ultimately enjoy his golf more.

Exposing the challenges as you go up

Last week we highlighted the challenge of increasing inconsistency of the distance hit with each Iron as you go up the set.

If you’ve bought the latest technology but you’ve still got a problem with inconsistency,
then here’s where the problem might lie.

Great social experiences are important for wellbeing

Research tells us that work pressure, business travel, and the smartphone are dramatically reducing the amount of time we invest in social interaction. The same research correlates that decline with the increase in stress, tension, and depression.

Play more golf. Make more friends. Take part in more social events. You should be living. And hitting a golf ball,
with friends who enjoy the moment with you, is living.
