This week was a very testing time indeed, with very little staff multi-tasking and trying to cover and keep the doors open.

The unrest in Zwehile and at Mount Pleasent was scary and unnerving to say the least, but the issue at hand is a huge concern for many and we are not here to judge.

Wednesday we had the mechanic cutting the greens, myself washing and packing carts and Tullishe waitressing! Well done to all for covering so well. To the staff that did manage to get to work, thank you. Especially to the guys out on the course
doing a great job to get the course playable, well done indeed! Also of course to the caterer for managing to keep us fed and watered!

Let us hope the leaders of the various communities can work out a suitable deal for all.

This week was also a big one for long standing member, Andrew Philip, who turned the big 5-zero. We celebrated with him and a whole host of his friends at the Soul Cafe on Saturday evening. There was a live band and it was fantastic, we all dressed up in 60’s and 70’s gear and danced the night away!

The other notable birthday was that of our old pro, Terry Westbrook, who turned the big 8-zero! He celebrated on Saturday at the Club and shot a gross 72! Well done Terry!

Now here’s a topic that has suddenly reared up and is a potential major issue for anyone who plays with TaylorMade, or wants to buy TaylorMade clubs. Last week it was announced that the distribution rights for South Africa are changing hands and the successful candidate was The Pro Shop retail chain, or more accurately the mother company More Corp.

Many people will be quite happy with this, thinking that The Pro Shop will now be selling TayloMade gear cheaply. We as Club Professionals, however, are extremely worried about this move and are currently waiting for news from More Corp about the way forward.

The Pro Shop has a good reputation for selling products to the public at below-recommended prices. If you have the distribution rights for arguably the biggest golf brand in the world and you have the biggest retail outlet in the country, it doesn’t take a genius to surmise what is going to happen to this brand in South Africa. Not to mention the effects for any on-course shop that wants to stock this product.

I still have some products in the shop, which is either going back to TaylorMade, going to be sold off cheaply or hopefully we can still trade the product successfully!

This week I leave you with 2 conundrums from Chris Brand:

When dog food is new, with improved taste, who tests it?

And secondly...
If glue is so good, why doesn’t it stick to the bottle?

There are really quick ways we can improve your short game control,
and we’ll look at what we can do in under 5 minutes.

To give you the control you need on a 30 metre pitch,
we will be looking to get you above 4000 RPM.

If you’re below this magic number on a 30 metre pitch shot,
then we’ve got work to do together.

We want you to improve your score on Par 3’s.
Part of that is avoiding 5’s, 6’s and even worse.
Sometimes the hole designer is looking to harm your scorecard.
Consider this real Par 3 (it’s the 200 metre+ 12th on White River Country Club):

Simple Tip #4
Sometimes a Par 3 is really a Par 4. Play it that way.
The vast majority of golfers should lay up in the safe area,
and then pitch the ball up onto the green.
It’s probably a 4, a chunked chip might mean a 5, but it could be a 3.
But out of bounds, and you’re playing 3 from the tee.
In the water and you’re playing 3 from a drop zone that forces you to skirt the water again.
Now about that chunked chip shot…

Billy Casper was a great golfer.
It’s worth noting that, in his
1 stroke 1959 US Open victory
at Winged Foot, he laid up in
every round on the Par 3 17th.

You’ll be faced with a course management challenge on all approach shots,
not just Par 3’s. Try playing a round where you take a ‘safety first’ approach to every shot.
Check out your score. Is it an improvement if you play within yourself?
Course management is an important part of your game; if you’d be interested
in an accompanied round to help with your course management,

Until next week have a great one.

Cheers,
Julz and the team
