  From the Founder’s Desk

Continual growth is one of our 5 core values here at BSI and as such attending coaching conferences has always been a priority. Last week I attended the 2-day CONQA Elite Sports Summit in Cape Town, along with a delegation of BSI staff.

We heard from a great line-up of local and international experts in high performance sport, including former All Black captain Kieran Read and experts from Arsenal FC Academy, Irish Rugby, Mclaren F1, Belgian Football Association, Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA), Stellenbosch FC, and Banyana Banyana. I’ve always found it useful to learn from other sports and see how we can relate and implement it into our golf training.

This week I am attending the PGA of South Africa Coaching Conference. I also have the honour of presenting to the delegates, alongside an excellent line-up which includes the coach of Collin Morikawa. BSI PGA Diploma graduate Murray Smit is also presenting at the conference on the system of coaching that he has developed. Another proud moment for us.

BSI Premier Medal

Congratulations to Jacques van der Merwe and Sean Paxton on their joint win in the BSI Premier Weekly Medal with scores of 70 played on Thursday, 13 October 2022 at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington GC East Course.

Jacques is on an incredible winning streak, taking 1st place in the last four BSI tournaments with an accumulated 3-under through his last seven competitive rounds on the tough East Course at Royal. As much as we love the 3-peat, what better than the quadruple!

Sean has won six 18-hole medals this year, which keeps him top of the Order of Merit with 97 111 points, 25 012 clear of number 2.

Each student-athlete is at a different stage of their performance development journey, so we also celebrate personal bests every week. Well done to Keagan Rollinson 71, Fred Njoroge 75, Cara Bosman 81 and Langelihle Bulose 81.

BSI Junior Academy Medal

Well done to Vuyisani Makama and Tawriq Abrahams on winning the BSI Junior Academy Weekly Medal with scores of 68 played at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington GC East Course on Friday, 14 October 2022.

This tied win sees Tawriq taking his 3rd BSI tournament top podium finish and the 4-under score is his personal best for the year. This is Vuyisani’s 12th win in BSI tournaments for the year and keeps him close to 30 000 points ahead of 2nd place in the Junior Academy Order of Merit. Keep up the great work boys.

 Open Day – 15 October 2022

We hosted our second Open Day for 2022 on Saturday, which was very well attended. In fact a record crowd was there to hear about our PGA Diploma programme, showing that the demand for our showpiece programme is stronger than ever.

Attendees listened to informative presentations on our golf training and academic programmes, and many mindful questions were asked, particularly on our high school academics. It is clear that more and more parents are seeking alternative options to mainstream schooling, and BSI is well positioned to cater for any student-athletes in this area. We also showcased first-hand the daily activities of our campus, and attendees were able to hear directly from our students.

  Final Year PGA Student Spotlight

BSI is always privileged to welcome such young and talented golfers to our academy and we get to meet so many students from all walks of life. This week we get to find out a little bit more about a true gentleman with impeccable manners who gives 100% in his academics and training. With such a positive outlook, 3rd year PGA Diploma student Kyle Ferreira will be great asset in the business of golf.

BSI: What made you choose to do the PGA Diploma and how did you find out about BSI?
KF: Since I can remember I wanted to be a PGA Professional and to work in the golf industry. I knew that a golf academy would be the perfect place for me. That’s when I started looking and came across BSI. I went to the Open Day and the rest was history.

BSI: How has BSI as a Sports Institute and Academy helped your golf game?
KF: BSI helped me a lot with my golf. Throughout the 3 years my game improved tremendously. My coach Chris Wright, mental coach Mark Fairbank and fitness coach, Renée Reinecke have been there for me every step of the way and didn’t hesitate to help wherever they could.

BSI: What areas have you improved the most over the past few years and what are the  developments that you have noticed and realised?
KF: My overall confidence as a person improved a lot. I was this shy Afrikaans speaking boy from a small town. Joining BSI has developed my character, confidence and self-belief. My physical and mental game improved so much regarding consistency. By trusting the process when going through swing changes really does pay off.

BSI: Tell us a bit about the non-golfing environment at BSI.
KF: Throughout the years our 3rd year group went from strangers to family, where we have got each other’s backs, no matter what. The BSI family created a safe environment to be in where you can talk about anything. Each and every one of the staff that I interacted with during my 3 years has treated me as family. The relationship with my fellow students as well as the BSI staff will last forever.

BSI: Where to after graduation?
KF: Next year I am planning on joining the PGA and to work in the golf industry to complete my practical hours in which at a later stage I would like to make use of the opportunity to work at Frenchman’s Creek Beach & Country Club in Florida USA and see where the golfing world takes me.

BSI: Any special moments during your time at BSI?
KF: The best times I would say is all the things that our 3rd year group did together, such as practice sessions on the range, gym sessions, academics as well as Friday Medals. Not only within our 3rd years, but the entire school played a big role in making BSI what it is and the great times that we’ve had making memories that will last a lifetime.

I would just like to thank Michael Balderstone for establishing such a fantastic academy, creating job opportunities world-wide. Next, I would like to thank my fellow students for a great time at BSI. Thanks to Mark Fairbank for always being there for us. Chris Wright who has helped me improve my golf game beyond expectations. Renée Reinecke who has supported and motivated me in the gym, in which I became golf fit, stronger and physically better every year. Last, but not least, a huge thanks to Jason Joel for putting the Matchplay and Medal Draws out every week. BSI would not have been such a great place without you all.

We wish Kyle all the very best as he embarks on his next stage in his exciting career ahead and look forward to following him along this path.

Kyle Ferreira
